WGVL/WYKS

Anyone know the height of WGVL's first tower when they were on 105.5? I know it's still standing (holding a ton of cells now) but it seems like it's missing a section.

I think they were 3Kw at 300 feet when that was the limit for class A's.
It was around 1972 that they switched from country to progressive rock.

I just looked at the site on Bing Maps. If the square building is the original building, it looks like both towers are not the original.
That makes no sense economically, I know.

I recall the original tower being very close to the building. The tower was just outside the left hallway rear door. Coax left the building from the right hallway rear, curved up onto the roof, then hung in the air out to the tower.

I think the width dimension of the original building determined the size of the fence around the tower. This was a cost effective build, no reason for the tower to be so far away that the building could not be part of the fence. That is why I think the tower was built to 300 feet, since it was the maximum HAAT for the Class at the time. I doubt going higher for better coverage was a consideration.

Then again, it has been 32 years since I have walked on the property.

The exact height of the original WGVL tower when it was constructed in 1970 was 285 feet supporting a three bay FM antenna with a 3kw ERP.

285' is right. The terrain there is slightly higher than average, so the station was at 300' HAAT. I believe that the smaller of the two towers is the original. It has been standing on that site since I first saw it in 1979, so unless it was replaced between 1969 and 1979, it's original.

Does anyone other than myself remember 'GVL's original distorted monaural country operation? Fortunately that didn't last long but unfortunately it did last too long :)
