WGVM-Another Steve Shelton disaster

Here's the official rules from the FCC regarding station identifications....
Station Identification. Stations must air identification announcements when they sign on and off for the day. They also must broadcast these announcements every hour, as close to the start of the hour as possible, at a natural programming break. TV stations may make these announcements on-screen or by voice only. Official station identification includes the station’s call letters, followed by the community specified in its license as the station’s location. Between the call letters and its community, the station may insert the name of the licensee, the station’s channel number, and/or its frequency. It may also include any additional community or communities, as long as it first names the community to which it is licensed by the FCC. DTV stations also may identify their digital multicast programming streams separately if they wish, and, if so, must follow the format described in the FCC’s rules.

Now...when listening to WGVM-AM you hear no such identification. As a matter of fact, you get ten seconds of dead air at the beginning of every hour.

Also....on WGVM you'll hear commercials for advertisers Christmas sales a month after Christmas and commercials promoting July or September specials at the Greenville casinos. Hey Steve....it's February buddy!!! He tells the advertisers that they're getting a great deal with him running free commercials on WGVM. How does that benefit the advertiser when the wrong commercials are on the station?

If there is a program director, then he should be fired. However, as the GM, Mr. Shelton is ultimately responsible.

They also have a program director! Is he not involved in the operation of the radio station?

Interesting response.

Do you know there is a program director?

Do you know that the program director is a HE?

Have you ever talked with a program director at this station, or maybe played poker with him/her/it?

Or, are you assuming that somewhere in the FCC rules or maybe in Leviticus (Old Testament) there is a rule that a station must have a program director?

You have aroused my curiosity.

Goat, think we were just saying that somebody should be in charge and keep an eye on the ship. Maybe we just assumed there was a Program Director or a Genral Manager who actually listened to the station.

Shelton is a radio genius. If you don't believe it, just ask him.

"You're only as good as what comes out of the speakers."

So true Mr. Fuss. I am familiar with Steve and his "ownership" conversations. Not sure if this is a quest to make himself look good to his buds or for his own self! Whatever the reason he is not a leader and certaibnly not an owner. Rumor has it that Delta Radio has a new FM that is going to attack the Urban market in the Delta? WBAD has long been the Hip Hop leader in that part of the Delta but is a poor excuse for a radio station. For one I am happy the area has a professional broadcaster at the helm.

Zach you are so correct. Can they rise to the competition and will their legendary status in The Delta hold off a frontal attack? These questions are not easily answered and only time will tell. I have to think that a professionally programmed Urban station in The Delta with some slick promotions and marketing will make a big dent in the WBAD audience base. We'll just have to wait and see if Mr. Sherman and Mr. Jackson will rise to the threat. WBAD seems to be one of the only stations around that does not have a website .. go figure!

Not only is WBAD lacking a web presence, but WGVM has no website either.

I can understand WGVM not having a web presence but WBAD!
MAX-99 doesn't even have a web site, nor do any of the Radio Cleveland stations. But let's remember we are talking about the Mississippi Delta, which is not exatly a hotbed of professional operators!

Hey Steve!!! Today is February 25th. Why are you still airing a commercial for a casino when the promotion ended Febraury 17th???

WAY TO GO!!! I wonder if the REAL owners of the radio stations know how you continually do this?

You guys need to cut Steve some slack! Every village needs an Idiot! It appears to me that Larry Fuss is creating a revenue problem for Steve with his cluster of stations in the Greenville market. Just wonder how much of a problem the new WIBT will be for WBAD? Time will tell.

I wish. I still need some sales folks who know what they're doing. If you know anyone, have them call me.

The search for sales people is a constant battle and the search is intent in all size markets. Who is making the money in the Delta if it's not Delta Radio? I hear that Lary Fuss is a first class operator and certainly he has got to be getting the lion share of the dollars.

Radio in the Delta is a labor of love. I don't think it's making anyone rich these days. Pawn shops and juke joints don't spend that much on advertising. Just hope you get some of the casino money and a couple local banks. Pray you can get that friday night revenue stream going also.

Rumor has it that Steve is on the ropes with his new "partners"! Revenues are not what he had promised and not sure he can droop the rates any lower to pick up the pace. Can you eat "trade"?

The point is that trade does not put any money in the bank to pay bills, pay staff, etc. Many stations actually count trade as income and when it comes time to review the bottom line they have a distorted view of their actual financial standing. I am told that Steve is the master at Trade!
