Unless you are taking a lot of calls and need to screen callers (which a producer should do) "running a board" is no big task. I did it back with carts. PC automation is even easier.Likely more budget trimming. It lets them pipe in national talent on her WRVE time slot for $0. I heard at one point they were making the news staff run the board for the morning show. Thaytmay have been before her, but it's probably back to being that way now.
Back in the day of Don Weeks it was very much a big task. There used to be alot of switching back and forth between news/traffic booths and live weather via ISDN multiples times per hour in addition to guests on the phone and a dozen commercial breaks that happened every few minutes. I doubt they do half of that anymore and you are right it probably is simple these days. Perhaps the host can fire the commercial breaks right from his position and any other needed elements are built into the automation. Even Wilkow's show was hectic back in the day. The producer was the call screener/board op simultaneously. I don't know how they did it listening to multiple things at the same time.

That was also the producers job. Was a very old building. You'd start to ramp up the delay just before the show and ramp it down before syndication. Once you hit the drop out you would have to wait a minute or two until the delay built back up and keep callers off until it did. Eventually I think every studio had dual panels so that either the host or producer could hit it.
Some hosts wouldn't even turn their own mics on. You did everything. Bigger markets had full time call screeners.

Unless the host had "personal" accounts that were sizeable and would go away without that host, l believe the proper title sould be "former host".Some hosts wouldn't even turn their own mics on.
