WGYM 1580 AM

Just wondering ,out of curiousity, has WGYM at any time ever been a successful radio station??? Seems like even a simulcast of WOND cant pick up one advertiser from the Hammonton area. I know the station sounds kind of terrible, probably from neglect by all of those eight owners...who probably never spent a dime on updating or improving the station. I wonder if the tower could be moved to another town in South Jersey,if then the station could stand on its own ??? Or is it too late to try and make an AM station profitable anywhere. I guess we have to thank the new owners of Green Broadcasting for at least improving the signal of the station somewhat...can now even be heard as far as the Hamilton mall.during the daytime hours.Dont know what improvements that they have made or funds that were spent to improve the signal, yet with all of the businesses in the Hammonton area, cant get one local business to advertise on that station..pretty pitiful...I can only imagine how much dollars need to be spent to bring this station back to its former self...the question is has this station always been a loser from day one???

I had a teacher in high school who said he had worked there around 1967 when it was WNJH. He said there were times when they would try to give away a small prize (like a loaf of bread) and nobody would call in for it. It's 1000 watts at the wrong end of the dial, a lot of its signal goes into the woods and it has tons of competition; it probably always struggled when it was a standalone.

The best in the business have tried securing local advertising for the station but all have failed. There at one time was a great sales force associated with the station but they failed in gaining adequate local advertising. The station was owned by a group located in the Atlantic City region known for bringing in a lot advertising dollars.

To the best of my knowledge it's always been a struggle for this station.

We had interest in it to expand our signal but it didn't pan out.

I had it coming in very well in the car today between Petersburg and Marmora, then it got overrun by electrical interference around the ShopRite and it was practically gone after I crossed Route 9. It came in a little better in Ocean City, but still not nearly as well as in that area on the mainland.

In related news, WBSS is back on the air, also simulcasting WOND (there was a joint WBSS/WGYM legal ID after the 11 AM ABC news). Don't know if the WIP simulcast will eventually be back or not.

I can confirm the problems with 1580. Back in January of 2001 Dick Taylor decided to program the station locally, targeted at Hammonton, as a sports station. Local sports news, local events, with Sports Babe and other syndicated fare to fill the hours. He tasked me with programming it.

We had great response from listeners, but we just couldn't sell it. The sports were gone and the WOND simulcast back shortly after I left the company in September.

I can see that happening as far as a strong listener response as a result of sports. Hammonton is a great sports town. They have a great reputation for supporting both their schools, Hammonton and Saint Joseph.

Having a conversation about the history and merits of WGYM is rediculous. I know you guys like radio but taking your interest to
such a microscopically irrelevant level is nerdishness-insularity-squared. It's kind of like using a convesation someone overheard at a bus stop or in a grocery store as a springboard for a conversation about the explosion of social media and staking a claim for having been there. Yikes.

andsoitgoes, Regarding our conversation about WGYM: I must admit I enjoy chatting about radio. It's sure is a lot more fun than complaining all Democrat and Republicans. :)

Getting back on track: I do wonder if WGYM could make it now as a spanish language station. There's a huge hispanic population now residing in the Hammonton region and they do not possess the "old town" mentality. Businesses want their business. Your thoughts?

As part of The Green Group, WGYM had Spanish programming several hours a day, and it was sold well. They similcast WOND till 10am, then went Spanish, all from the Linwood studios. Weekends too. The time was purchased by the personalities and resold. But for the life of me, I cannot remember the names. I do remember a certain WMGM jock slipping into the studio and putting on Santana cuts or "Suavacito" when the host would go for a smoke. All in good spirits.

WBSS was simulcasting a spanish station from Long Island when the last group owned the station. The problem I saw with that was it was not a so-called tropical station playing a variety of Salsa ,Merengue,bachata,etc..something everyone could enjoy...it was mostly spanish rap music..If WBSS goes spanish, you are correct, they need local programming that would play a variety of spanish music ..like WMIZ in Vineland... and simulcasting over WGYM would be an excellent idea as Hammonton has a lot of spanish speaking folks. I had told that to the previous owners that they needed local spanish programming from the Greene studios and simulcast over WGYM,but they were too busy on their own agendas to make it work and decided to simulcast a spanish rap station that they owned in Long Island instead.
