WGZR Hilton Head/Savannah

I missed it...when did WGZR 106.9 change to Country? Weren't they an alternative station before that? And way long ago weren't they a smooth jazz station?

Can anyone outline their recent format changes for me?

Thanks

They changed to Country in March 2003 when they traded formats with sister 104.9, putting Country Gator on a stronger 100kw signal (whether or not that's helped the station, well you can look at the ratings and decide for yourself...) and Triple A Wave on the weaker 104.9, which is lucky to cover Savannnah proper.

The previous smooth jazz format was around '96-'98 as WIJY. 106.9 has been many things over the years standards WLOW, smooth jazz WIJY, news/talk WHHR-FM, modern AC and modern rock WWVV, and now country WGZR.

FCC shows it became WLOW in 1987, WHHR-FM in 1994, back to the WLOW calls 9 months later, to WIJY 12/96, to WWVV 5/98, and then to WGZR 3/03.
