WHAM 1180 Broadcasting on a Delay?

Last night I was listening to Kim Komando on WHAM 1180 and at 11PM FOX News came on. I listened for a minute and accidently switched my radio to my local Clear Channel FOX affiliate WELI 960 AM out of New Haven, CT. When I flipped back to WHAM 1180 I heard what I had just heard on WELI. Why does WHAM 1180 broadcast on a delay?

WHAM is now broadcasting in HD, and the process of creating and broadcasting an HD signal produces a several second delay. To ensure that the cross-over between analog and digital is as seamless as possible, the analog broadcast must be delayed to match. I would imagine that this process is left in place even when they shut down the HD at night.

I do not know if WHAM also runs in a studio-dumpable delay for the rest of the day; if the do, it would simply increase the amount of delay already produced by the HD upgrade.
