WHAM Clear Channel Before Clear Channel

When I worked at WHAM during the mid to late 1970s WHAM's ID included the words, a 50,000 watt clear channel station. That was to emphasize the fact that WHAM’s signal was so powerful it could be heard in 38 states and Canada.

Yes it is ironic that years later a company named Clear Channel now owns WHAM.

When I used to live in Chicago in the 60's I used to listen to Harry Abraham & Jazz at night which I thought was pretty cool.

Harry Abraham, now there is a name I haven't heard in many years. He brings back a few memories for me, especially ones where Harry would come to work late for his shift.

After working a 9 to 10 hour day, doing news for both WHAM and its FM station, plus hosting WHAM's talk show, by 1:00 am I was tired and wanted to go home. Harry would pull this routine of showing up late. So after a few requests on my part to show up on time I got fed up and starting putting Gene Autry, John Wayne and other records I could find to start his show. He would blow his top but he finally showed up for work on time.

The last I heard about Harry he was arrested on bank robbery charges. I'm sure he's served his time. Where he is now, I have no idea.

Re: Harry Abraham

Mark,

What a great story! It served him right and you accomplished what you set out to do. Talk about creative problem solving!

What years did you work at WHAM? I bugged Mike Harvey to death during the short time he was there. It must have been around 1979 when there was an opening on the overnight Jazz show and I would have loved doing it. I bugged Mike about it so much that I still remember the WHAM phone number to this day...454-4884. I would have arrived early for that one!

Mike

I heard that he served both the state time & federal time for the robbery then went to Philadelphia to live. That was many years ago.

Re: Harry Abraham

If anyone is interested harryabraham.com has a show intro (Best Of All Possible Worlds) & pix from his days with WHAM along with other announcers from that time.

Ah that infamous theme song of Harry's. Boy do I remember that. I visited Harry's web page and am glad to see that he's remarried and apparently enjoying life. Everyone deserves another chance and I sincerely hope that Harry is living a happier life in Pennsylvania.

Harry's type of radio was from a different era. An era that we will never see again.
