WHAM Five O'Clock News suggestion

If you are referring to WHAM radio’s 5 o’clock news hour my prediction is that in near future the station will just carry Channel 13’s 5 and 6 pm newscasts in order to save money by getting rid of more radio news staff.

I'd be very surprised if WHAM would do that. Granted, I'm from outside Rochester. But I would compare WHAM to Buffalo's WBEN. Both stations are huge players in their respective markets, and their owners are unlikely to make changes that would adversely affect listenership. That's not to say they don't look at ways of saving a buck. But we all know that putting a TV newscast on radio simply doesn't work. The sound is awful. TV news is written for the video. It would be suicide. Yes, some lower rated AM stations have been known to run TV news because it gives them a chance to have a news presence. But I'd really be surprised if a highly rated station like WHAM would take the risk of putting a TV newscast on their station.

WHAM Radio is already taping Channel 13's 11pm news and using 13's sound bytes as part of 1180's early morning newscasts, so the idea of WHAM radio replacing their 5pm news with Channel 13 is not all that far-fetched. Remember it's not the product anymore, but the bottom line, which is why WHAM radio fired two of their reporters/news anchors last year. It was to save a few bucks. I stick with my prediction that someday listeners to WHAM 1180 will turn on their radios at 5pm and hear Doug, Ginny, or who ever else is anchoring TV news.

While I would not be surprised if this happens, the concerns on quality are already evident. Some of the sound bites are almost unintelligible taken from the newscasts. It may work when you can see the picture, but I have heard some cuts that just were difficult to understand on the radio. I agree, that while it may be a cost saving move, TV news is totally different in its delivery. We have heard already in this market when this simulcast or tape delay was done by another station, and it was lacking in both content and quality.

I think NBC10 sounds decent on 1040 WYSL, but then again do they set up for that?

Anyways I think the 5 O'Clock News Hour needs more traffic updates in the voids where they play fourth-rate music. And how much longer will 1180 and 13 be paired together, considering that 13 is about to go under new ownership.

Are you by any chance listening online? I've been scratching my head trying to think of where they are playing a lot of music, because I hear almost none except at the beginning and end of the program -- right out of the 5 o'clock news update and then at the very closing when Joe Lomonaco says his adios. But then it occurred to me that when I've listened to their web stream that they often play a small rotation of instrumental music instead of spots.

Indeed I am. My work hours changed a while ago so whenever I drive back out to Brockport it's already long past evening rush. But I'm glad to hear they aren't toturing listeners of the actual broadcast with inspid elevator music. I suppose I could just bring an actual radio to work with me, but listening online can be so much more fun!
