WHAM IBOC is off

Did they finally give up on it?

Now if only WBZ would turn theirs (IBOC) off.

As for your question I don't have any answers. Perhaps WHAM decided either to drop IBOC or they are making repairs to it.

Best wishes for WHAM being released from the grip of the sound of a 10,000 psi air leak.

It's probably too early to tell. The iboc equipment doesn't like to start up properly some days.
I have heard WLS and othes have false starts, where the hiss only runs 1 second or less, then it drops right off.

Then there are the days when I hope it's been dropped, only to find it back on one or 10 days later.

It's not too early to hope, though! It is truly amazing how an AM sounds when you've gotten accustomed to the mush hiss,
and then it's suddenly gone. I still can't fathom why AM would saddle itself with the radio equivalent of a bad haircut
and then pay for the right to maintain the bad haircut status.

Well, all good things do come to an end. They turned it back on.

For the life of me, I don't understand why. Who listens to AM on anything other than a simple radio? And, what radio (car, boombox or table) is going to give you anything over 3k in the high(?) end. Since all WHAM offers is 24 hours of talk, is the HD there to enhance the bumper music?

From what I read, the only audiences for AM are Luddites like me and by our advanced age we won' t hear anything over 2k anyways...

LOL! Fortunately it's better than that. AM actually can sound quite good without any digital "enhancements" if only TPTB would let us do it in an optimal way. Most stations are like mine--running transmitters capable of passing a full 50-15,000 hZ audio range, either in mono or C-QUAM stereo, if the Feds didn't force us to roll off the highs at 10 kHz. And if the receiver manufacturers had continued to make radios that could capture all that range and pass it through the audio amplifier stage into the speaker, you'd hear it come through just as clearly as an FM station. Some radios (including a lot of recent Delco car radios, like the one in my Chevy) actually do a pretty good job of presenting AM signals that are transmitted crisply and clearly, so it certainly can be done. IBOC actually does more harm than good, gobbling up a wider bandwidth than well-transmitted analog audio on AM while coming through little better than a phone call on most of the 99.99 per cent of us who still listen to radio on analog receivers.

AFAIK there is a variety of reasons why IBOC goes on and off at any given station.

They range from non-renewal of your licensing agreement, whereupon at its expiration (since you haven't purchased a fresh authorization code) the system simply shuts off, kind of like those loser "buy-here-pay-here" used car lots. You buy some beater which has a keypad on the dash. If you don't make your WEEKLY $50 cash payment, you don't get your WEEKLY code to drive your car and the engine won't start until you catch up on the vigorish.

Then, since the system is essentially a computer, you have the familiar crashing-and-freezing problems inherent in Windows operating systems. And firmware upgrades. Also I understand most operators find it advisable to shut the HD encoder down and reboot it occasionally.

And of course, without notice, sometimes I hear it just stops. And nobody knows why.

GREAT system. Obviously "designed by broadcasters." ::)
