WHAM programming

Lonsberry says that he's no longer doing the Utah show. And he does start Jan. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. on WSYR, per their website.

I'm sorry to see Michael Savage replaced by Sean Hannity. Hannity is just a shill who is about as entertaining as listening to paint dry. Savage was entertaining, informative and what radio should be. Hannity is a symbol of what is wrong with radio today.

And that's why WYSL AM-FM will start airing Savage Monday 1/9 in his former slot, 9pm weeknights.

I can see why you've made this decision, Bob. This is obviously a smart programming move. But I will say this. I listened to Michael Savage once. We were traveling through Albany, where his show was airing. I wanted to listen to this guy, whom I had heard about. As my wife and I listened, Savage made fun of mentally ill people who were staffing a San Francisco restaurant. After 15 minutes, my wife asked me to change the station. I willingly did so. I have never listened to Michael Savage again, even when he spent some time on the Buffalo airwaves during the ill-fated talk experiment at WBUF. Michael Savage is an appalling, offensive talk show host who appeals to the worst in people. I'm just glad he's not on in Buffalo. Maybe it's all an act because he does draw listeners. But that doesn't make it less abhorrent!

Phillip, we've had spirited exchanges here before and I start this comment by stating (a) I respect your opinions even if we disagree, and (b) I'm sure you heard what you heard.

At the same time, it must be said I've had Savage on our station as an interview guest by other hosts numerous times (Laura Ingraham and Quinn/Rose have had him on.) I've also heard all kinds of horror stories about how "Savage said this" and "Savage said that." First of all, having had Savage/Weiner on our station on several occasions and having listened to him over the years, some of these accounts simply don't ring true. And I have had to dismiss many of them as apocryphal. Investigation usually produces examples of people who don't like Savage, either misinterpreting something he said or repeating something they heard secondhand (usually from "mainstream media.") This also happened back in the early days of Rush, when we were one of his very first affiliates.

There's no question that Savage is a lightning rod for criticism and that he outrages one end of the political spectrum. (So does Rush.) But since announcing this decision, we've haven't had this much reaction since AP cancelled All News Radio back in 2005. And I can tell you: these loyal and vocal Savage fans are not loons. Nor are they stupid neaderthals.

I personally don't care for Savage's act, but in fairness to the guy, I've heard him launch into some very long monologues which turned out in the end to be clearly sarcastic, with very little evidence along the way that he was being tongue-in-cheek. That sort of style can be fun, but it certainly could horrify listeners who tune out 3/4 of the way through.

I've never heard his show, and it doesn't sound like anything I'd seek out. All I know is that his show continually appears on lists where advertisers say they don't want their spots to air. Those advertisers include Netflix, Geico, Sams Club, Wal Mart, and many more. If those major advertisers don't want to be heard in his show, perhaps we should take note.

Yeah, thanks, BigA. And the "blacklist" for national advertisers also includes Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Mancow, Mark Levin and Sean Hannity. So what? If anybody paid attention to those dopey lists no leading talk product would have any business on-air and GEICO, Sams Club, "and many more" would be relegated to advertising to twelve listeners on Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz. (Not for nothing, if you want to decry low-class, hysterical, boorish talk products you ought to start with Schultz.)

"I've never heard his show." That's a frequent refrain from those taking passionate and labored potshots at successful topical talkers. We used to run into that all the time with Rush and Don Imus. I guess if you've never heard his show, you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

I personally know a few people who are happy that WYSL is carrying Michael Savage. And with the station's FM translator, they can now hear WYSL at night.

WYSL adding Savage (not Bob) is a very good move for the station. He's not my cup of tea, but he does have an audience. I know that he had a loyal following on WFBL in Syracuse. In fact, he was the only thing anyone listened to on the station. So this might give WYSL a bump in the ratings.

WYSL adding Savage (not Bob)

Maybe it should!! :D

C'mon RCS...enough desk duty...smell out the mic and rock this town!! ;D

HDBG

That sure sounded like Savage of the Bob variety essentially co-hosting the Bill Nojay Show this afternoon when I was listening while out and about...

Say it isn't so!! ;D Being outside of the"sound of my voice"...is it possible he caved to "microphobia"? ;D
I knew it wouldn't last....writing checks is fun, but playing on the radio is more funner....

Confirmations please... :D

I'd rather hear Robert Savage than Michael. Weiner is a self-inflated, fascist pimp. Heh, just using one of his tactics. And I have listened to him, so I know what his act is. Weiner can be quite spellbinding. I just don't like his "content," to use a word that's in play in another thread. But see, there's this little thing on my radio that, if I turn it, my radio makes different sounds. Amazing little app. More people should become acquainted with it. It's not Weiner that scares me (actually he doesn't one bit), it's the alleged legion of listeners who buy into his shtick. Use the tuning app. It works.

Heh. Has Michael Weiner had Anthony Weiner on? His audience would go nuts over the thought of Weiner-on-Weiner...

I'm with HDBG. Let's yuk it up a little (not to be confused with "puking.")

Yep, I'm still on the air. Morning drive nooz capsules, co-hosting Nojay when he's in-studio, ditto Tom Hamilton Show Saturday mornings. You didn't actually think I could build these studios and not use them, right? I mean, c'mon. I'm a RADIO guy. :D

Thanks, aaron for the positives on the signal - hey, not 100 watts, it's NINETY-NINE ( (c) 1983 Toto) - tryin' to get me fined??

As I prepare for Monday night - is that pronounced weener or whiner? ;D

Mr. Savage asks, "As I prepare for Monday night - is that pronounced weener or whiner?"

Always thought 'whiner' was most accurate and reflective of his style. ;-)

Anyway, he might help WYSL get noticed at night. I'll venture a guess that his core listenership is in the burbs south, east and west of the city where WYSL's AM signal reaches best 24/7.
