WHAM's Matthews Show Three Hours on 12/23

A little bit of local trivia...

I'm only an infrequent listener to the Bob Matthews Show on WHAM, mostly because I am not that much of a sports follower.

I happened to have it on last night, though, and he announced that today's show (Thursday 23rd Dec) was going to start at 5PM instead of 6PM and would be the first three hour show he's ever done "in 27 years or however long I've been doing this."

However long Bob has been doing the show, it is a remarkable achievement to be on the air that long in any market, much less one of the markets which is small enough to have much of its live and local replaced with "otherwise."

It certainly does not appear it was his idea to do a three hour show. He sounded as surprised as the listeners that he was on.

I tuned in to listen to the news at 5pm and there was just dead air. There were some popping sounds and then some promos rolled. And then it sounded like a raw advertising reel for Dr. Dean Edell rolled. Then after about eight or nine minutes, it sounded like they had the problem fixed and were back in their show.

Then at about ten after, suddenly they were tossing to Bob Matthews. There must have been some kind of colossal failure in the studio and they must have grabbed Matthews and threw him on the air.

I've never heard anything like it on air (not that I listen that often).
