WHAS completely missed issuing the Carroll County tornado warning

I called WHAS radio TWICE this morning to inform them of the tornado warning that was being relayed over WAVE television. No tones were issued on WHAS so I guess other media might not have been notified too. After my first call at 6:30, they started playing a recorded message with Mayor Greg Fischer! I called them back and they finally answered at 6:45. I asked "Why are you playing a recorded interview with Mayor Fischer when there is a TORNADO WARNING for Carroll County??" They hung up on me. Way to go, morning team!

I guess it's more important during "drive-time" to sell a "Sleep Number bed" than to pass along life-threatening news!

At 6:47 Tony Cruise finally acknowledged there was a Tornado Warning for Carroll County.

I think I'll visit the ole FCC website and pass along my story.

Before you waste your time with the FCC, is Carroll county in the Louisville Market now? Many years ago I worked at WIKI COL Carrolton the county seat of Carroll County, I filled out Arbitron reports we were in the CINNCINATTI market. I guess they have to draw the line somewhere between the two markets. I know there is some confusion because on real clear winter nights you use to see the old Channel 3 tower’s lights from Mound Hill Road. Now if WIKI and or WLW missed it there is a problem.

Point #1 I did work until 2 a.m. this morning so I could have goofed, but...
Point #2 Christine Dutton was announcing the tornado warniing and WAVE stayed with her during the entire 30 minute period. So why did WAVE cover this and not WHAS radio, especially when they are "partners"?

It's really a "That was then, this is now issue". Back then WHAS radio wasn't shy about their service area. They fired tones for Kentucky and Indiana counties that were within about a 100 mile radius and it was done as the National Weather Service issued the warnings. Even after the state plan moved to FM and WAMZ was considered the second link past DES, WHAS radio still continued the policy. The general direction of this business has changed which is why their once stellar weather coverage is no more.

Carrolton is 50+ miles from Louisville.

At 6:30AM on a Wednesday, how many people in Carrolton will be listening to an AM station, through lightning distortion, from that long a distance?

Then, take that number and cut it at least in half, accounting for the the number of long distance AM listeners who would be tuned into Cincinnati stations, rather than Louisville stations.

Now, what's left? And exactly who would a Louisville station be broadcasting continuous coverage to?

It seems to me you're talking about a tiny potential audience getting their primary storm information in that manner.

Couple of problems here. First of all, the National Weather Service did not issue a tornado warning for Carroll County at 6:30 this morning. Or if they did, they did not send it out via EAS.

Here is the EAS log from 6:00AM until 7:47AM today-

Received 04/27/11 06:05:37 Tornado Watch, Matched filter OTHERS, Received on Monitor 3. Log Only. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Henry, KY, Nelson, KY, Shelby, KY, and Spencer, KY beginning at 6:05 am and ending at 11:05 am (KSDF/NWS)

Received 04/27/11 06:07:19 Tornado Warning, Matched filter TORNADO WARN, Received on Monitor 3. Automatic Relay. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for Henry, KY, Oldham, KY, Shelby, KY, and Trimble, KY beginning at 6:06 am and ending at 6:36 am (KSDF/NWS)

Sent 04/27/11 06:07:26 Tornado Warning, Sent from header TORNADO WARN. EOM received 04/27/11 06:08:33. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for Henry, KY, Oldham, KY, Shelby, KY, and Trimble, KY beginning at 6:06 am and ending at 6:36 am (WQNU)

Duplicate 04/27/11 06:07:34 Tornado Warning, Received on Monitor 1. Automatic Relay. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for Henry, KY, Oldham, KY, Shelby, KY, and Trimble, KY beginning at 6:06 am and ending at 6:36 am (WAMZ)

Duplicate 04/27/11 06:07:40 Tornado Warning, Received on Monitor 2. Automatic Relay. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for Henry, KY, Oldham, KY, Shelby, KY, and Trimble, KY beginning at 6:06 am and ending at 6:36 am (WHAS AM)

Received 04/27/11 07:49:00 Severe Thunderstorm Warning, Matched filter OTHERS, Received on Monitor 3. Log Only. The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Henry, KY and Shelby, KY beginning at 7:48 am and ending at 8:18 am (KSDF/NWS)

Notice the tornado warning sent by the National Weather Service at 6:07 Am and immediately relayed by WQNU, WAMZ, and WHAS. But that was Henry, Oldham, Shelby, and Trimble. There was nothing for Carroll county in the 6:00 hour from KSDF/NWS or anyplace else that I can determine.

For what it's worth, WHAS sent a tornado warning for Carroll County later in the morning that was received from somewhere at 8:05AM. That one did not come via KSDF/NWS, so I don't know where that one came from.

But it appears to me that

1. - WHAS automatically sends tornado warnings for Carroll County and
2. - WHAS did not receive a tornado warning for Carroll county at 6:30.

Second issue: Even assuming the original poster was completely correct- that there was a tornado warning for Carroll County and WHAS decided they didn't want to run it, so what?

Where is the FCC rule that says they have to run tornado warnings at all? (Clue- there isn't such a rule)

between this response and wildcat guy above, I think the only appropriate thing to say to the original poster is...

BOOM! roasted.

While I agree that severe weather coverage on WHAS leaves a lot to be desired... Carroll County, KY is served by the NWS in Wilmington, Ohio.
