WHAS IBOC IS OFF!

I noticed yesterday that the Dayton and Columbus Reds affiliates were 8 seconds or so behind WLW, but I was in an area with some extra static so I couldn't tell if WLW's IBOC was off. I think the Reds are at home tonight so if I remember I'll listen then and see how it sounds.

I swear WHAS had their IBOQ on. It isn't on now.

The last couple of days, I was down in Pineville KY near Middlesboro, just a few miles from where VA KY & TN meet. No power lines, no strong locals, starlit skys (at least after the rain stopped).

A few night observations: 1070/WFNI Indy was strong but with fading (better signal than I usually get in SW Ohio). 830/WTRU Kernersville NC strong. 590/WVLK Lexington KY, weak but steady signal. 580/WCHS Charleston WV with Cincinnati Reds game. 600/WKYH Painstville KY with Reds game. WKYH is supposed to be 43 watts at night. It is at least 80 miles from Paintsville to Pineville, so maybe they keep things cranked up nights for Reds games.

Several other frequencies including 810 KHZ, had daytime only stations broadcasting well into the evening. I won't complain because it makes for better DXing.

Although I was on top of a mountain, FM stations were few and far between.

WLW left its IBOC off after the Reds tonight. I was wondering driving around Newark, Ohio why WLW was coming in considerably stronger, and that was why. If the signal itself wasn't any stronger, the audio itself was much louder. How refreshing. I won't count on it to stick around. :D

Wanted to modify my previous post but can't ... just before 3 a.m. here in Ohio, WLW's IBOC remains off. No hash on 690, 710 or even WGN, which even at night you can hear up here.

WLW's noise generator was still off at 7 AM this morning. So refreshing!

And WLW's jamming equipment is still off at 1:50PM...sweet. Hopefully they will duly note the total lack of listener complaints about it not being there & finally someone will pipe up at a staff meeting & ask the $64K question : Why are we doing this?

Off all Friday too. Either they're doing some maintenance - maybe upgrading to the new kind of IBOC WBBM is using - or they've trashed it. Just loving this while it lasts.

If it's off during the day Mon-Fri (which it is), that speaks volumes about their commitment to the technology. I still think what triggered this is delay complaints from the large number of folks who bring transistor radios to the Red's game...those Reds games generate huge ratings for WLW. Might the mighty IBOC albatross get tossed under the bus to protect that golden goose?

It was back on during the day yesterday, but was not able to listen during the game to see if it was off then. That had to have been what triggered it. I almost e-mailed the station to say how much better it sounds without IBOC. If it happens again soon, I plan to (and would be curious if I got a response).

Don't mention iboc! Just say the awful hiss, which had been gone, is back.

You disqualify yourself from consideration if you give away your radio-ness. 8)

Yep...it's back...DAGNABIT!
