WHAS local news on Sunday

I was listening to WHAS this afternoon and heard local news. On a Sunday afternoon! What's up with that? I thought there was no local news on "The Big 84" from Saturday morning until Monday morning. It was good to hear. Hope it continues.

Are you sure it was today's news and not from Friday? ::)

Why would they broadcast Friday's news today? Stupid question I know. I guess I was so shocked to hear local news on a Sunday, I didn't pay attention to the stories ::)

They wouldn't do that on purpose, but if a newscast got recorded last week and accidentally played back today, that could happen.

If WHAS had a live, local newscast on Sunday, I would consider that alone to be newsworthy...perhaps even "breaking news".

It's obvious you guys aren't regular listeners on Sunday's. I'm a regular listener to Dave Ramsey from noon-3 and their has always been local news at the top of each hour. It's been this way for years.

All I know is that I was passing through Louisville on a Sunday between 4-5PM maybe 6-7 years ago and there was a 4 mile traffic jam on 65 northbound. Next day I heard it was a multiple fatality, multiple vehicle accident. WHAS had 2 minutes of network news, a local spot or two, 2 minutes of KNN news featuring a story about cattle being loose on the road 175 miles SE of Louisville and no weather forecast. I was not the only one of the thousands stuck in that traffic that came away with "Depend On It" being an empty promise. Even a convenience store is willing to pay someone minimum wage to offer several dozen people a fountain drink on Sunday afternoon, but apparently WHAS is unwilling to pay someone to offer a couple hundred thousand people needed information. By that definition, Thornton's is a better public servant than Clear Channel is....and that's sad.

Are you sure it wasn't someone out of their hub in Cincy reading stories from the Courier-Journal?

I heard these newscasts yesterday after the 4PM and 6PM Fox News.

I did read that CC is treating their Large markets differently than their Medium and Small markets now. And they consider Louisville a Large market, but Indy is medium. That makes a lot of sense ???. Perhaps the long slide in WHAS' reputation is starting to stabilize or even reverse? If so, it sure took long enough!

But is it too late? If I'm in the car and want local news, I don't bother with WHAS anymore. I flip over to WFPL.

Exactly. I gave up on WHAS years ago. Actually other than wifi I gave up on radio for the most part. I wish I could have wifi going down the road.

Bob: I remember that horrible mess on I-65 and all the traffic jams caused by it and you are correct. There was nothing on WHAS, nada.

I'm trying to figure how Louisville is a large market and Indianapolis is a medium one? Only in CheapChannels sick and twisted mind ;)

You guys are too hard on WHAS. They are still the default station and ranked # 1 every book. I just wish they had more local weekend programs.

Exactly. They are the only viable signal in their genre, thanks to some strategic buying and selling by Clear Channel in 1996 and 1999. So if you like news talk, they are the default station. Thus, they win by default just like you said.

They are a whopping 1.1 shares ahead of the third place station, B96. Even though the vast majority of WHAS listeners are over 55 and slowly dying off, they are, by golly, the default station for that older generation and a few sports fans.

And that deal is pretty well sealed at this point, because nobody's going to blow up DJX, SFR, VEZ, or QNU to put on talker which would never recoup the money spent no matter how successful.

And why don't they have more weekend programs?

SFR? I thought it was "The Eagle" now? LOL

I'm an engineer. Call letters still reign supreme with me. :)
I'm an engineer too Greg, but I no longer trust calls...my key ring is full of 92.7, 102.9, 107.3 etc keys. I found that call letters aren't nearly as constant as frequencies are.

I think am 640 kfi is a decent clear channel news talk station in los angeles.A good weekend lineup with no infomercials.Much ebtter then what there sis 840 whas airs.

I really miss drudge on sundays nights.

Just like Greg said, they are the default number one station. It's not because of anything they do. What will happen when their demographic finally dies off? You sure as hell don't see Terry Meiners' show skewing to the younger folk.

Technically Indianapolis is the Larger Market than Louisville in terms of Market Size.

Clear Channel Midwest by Size
3 Chicago
11 Detroit
22 St Louis
29 Cincinnati
30 Cleveland
35 Columbus
40 Indianapolis
54 Louisville
63 Dayton
69 Grand Rapids

so by Size. Louisville is Smaller than Indy. so the Louisville as a Large Market to Indy's Medium size made me laugh
