WHAS

WHAS sounding better lately? Perhaps. But it has never sounded better than when Joe Donovan was hosting the all night show!

Boy!!! I'll DRINK to THAT !! Joe was GREAT on overnights.

WHAS was a darned good radio station. The Van Vance sports show was also a great listen, and I'm not a fan of UK or UL.

WHAS quality is not as good these days, but certainly better than its sister up the road in Mason OH. For me, Cyndi Sullivan is a Saturday morning must listen.

It has been my experience that 840/WHAS and 1100/WTAM both have excellent signals. I've listened to them on my travels all over the East, South, and Midwest.

I once heard what is now WTAM in Lubbock, TX. But that was in the late 60's - too much interference now. I have never heard them from Dallas or Houston.

And I'll drink another one to that. Wow do I miss that show!

"So set 'em up Joe" I'll not only drink to that....I'll buy the round!

Are you all talking about the same Joe Donavan that was on the old "Big 8" CKLW (20-20 news) and who recently retired from Detroit all-news WWJ 950 am?

Yes - he was good - loved how he phrased things: "Motor City Detroit - the city the French founded and the automobile enriched..."

Don't hear too many of them like that anymore.

In my travels, I've found WHAS to be reliable into Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas.

I have another topic describing it too, but someone subtly "suggested"(?) I post my catch here. :)

I picked it up about 15 years ago while on a hill in Pleasanton, CA. It came in as strong as a local station; at first I thought it was a Vegas station until I heard the WHAS id (several times). I had it for about 20 mins before it faded, and have never been able to catch it again. To this day, its the most distant AM station I've picked up from the Bay Area.
