I probably shouldn’t specify, as I can certainly respect the effort that was going into it. With that being said, I spent a very short time there volunteering as part of a school project when I was working on my bachelor’s degree. My contributions did not add up to much, as every time I showed up to volunteer nobody was ever there. And then one time I showed up, they had no idea who I was but turned me loose in the building anyway. I live by the mantra that it might be wise to keep a closer eye on your operation if you’ve got people going on the air (especially if you don’t know them).I'd say there's room for everybody, the religious, community and so forth. I agree KVSH is a fine example.
fordranger: what was the 'rinkydink' LPFM you volunteered at?
It sounds like your experience was far worse than mine. Nothing like that happened to me, but I didn’t always feel right about what they were asking from me. The LP I worked for asked me if I would be willing to host some sort of talk show on their station. They knew I was a student in a psychology program, and thought it might be a good idea to have me come in and do a show about mental health. Although (like every person who works in radio) I would like my own talk show, it’s really not a good idea to be giving out mental health advice when you aren’t qualified (particularly if you’re a 20 year old student). Unfortunately, I’m not Fraiser Crane.Gotcha on the call letters, fordranger. I am in agreement with you. I'd know everything happening at the station if I was running it. It's just asking for trouble if you don't. In fact even when you do, you get a few surprises.
In my instance, two employees making love on the couch by the window at midnight as reported by an advertiser and walking in on about 30 people partying in the lobby of the station and more out the back door smoking pot about 11 on Friday evening. There was some pricey liquor. I later learned the evening jock would play certain songs that were messages and listeners who knew would show up. I called all their parents or someone to give them a ride. Didn't want the police involved as I figured the parents would be just as embarrassed as me and thankful their kid didn't get a ticket or DUI. I didn't want the paper putting that on their front page (they hated us and I don't know why).
