What $5m Will Buy

That's what Nurse Jeff and I've heard The Men In Secret Underwear want for Sports Parking Lot 8~sixty. We've also heard the lease is up on the tower site in another year or so making things just a tad more interesting. But why would TMISU want to unload this less than primo facility? Doesn't cost much to run...there'll be conflicting games on Sports Parking Lot 6~twenty..and $5m is chump change to these guys. Any takers at this price?

It'll cost a lot more than the $5 million that TMISU want to keep 860 on the air.

Whoever owns the station will have to pay to have the current site demolished and will have to rebuild somewhere else. I and others have mentioned this before, but the requirement to null the signal away from San Diego/Tijuana at night makes it almost impossible for 860 to be piggybacked onto another station's towers, so a new tower site would be required. Lotsa luck here in NIMBY-land.

They could downgrade 860 to a Class D and share the Tower Plaza site with soon-to-be ESPN Radio 620 (860 is omnidirectional during the day and could theoretically upgrade to 5 kW days without requiring a directional antenna), but their nighttime signal would be so bad (probably 100 watts or less with KTAR's pattern) that it's probably not worth it to TMISU or anyone else.

I can't see anyone ponying up that kind of money for a station with a tower site that they'll just have to tear down. Frankly, I think KMVP will go the way of KDYW and KARV after next year.

I think 5 million dollars would be better spent on PK files to disrupt the transmiter broadcasting at free. Or a very romantic weekend getaway with Nurse Jeff... ;)

Stranger things have happened (insert KFNX here). Nurse Jeff and I doubt 8~sixty will go away as someone will figure out the challenges ahead. Look at KFNN...diplexed with KKNT and operating with a blazing 100 watts at night*. No big deal as they have a format that needs no ratings.

* somehow at local sunset it doesn't sound as if they're operating with 100 watts. Hmmmmm...wonder if they've got the wrong time programmed in the computer and that 22kw blowtorch is left on too long?

I have the answer for 860. :D

When I took drivers education in high school, we had a driving track at the school. The instructor would have us tune to an AM frequency so we could listen to him broadcast driving instructions to us from the tower. ( Are you following me so far? Good ;) )

Anyhow, someone could buy 860 and start a driving school and use the signal to communicate driving instructions to the student drivers. Brilliant, right? ::)

Alternately, someone could buy the signal and advertise "Colon Blow" 24/7, or Err America could have its very own station!!!

The possibilities are endless!! 8)

Well, $5 mil is even smaller chump change to CC and they're selling entire small market clusters for that. If only 860 had a format or any billing left after its stripped of ESPN, it would be a decent deal.

$5-million is a low price, but that's like buying a Honda Civic that is nothing but a chassis and license plate. Sure, you got a great deal, but you still don't have a car until you invest a poopload more.

Actually, a new site is in play under a mile north of the present site. Its City of Phx land (where they train bus drivers,) and the city would love to drag some extra revenue out of the land. Also, the water table hasnt been sucked down by mining so ground conductivity is a lot better. (hence better signal) And since the new site is under 2 miles away they wont need to re-engineer the array. I dont see them going to 2K but they might be able to get a better sound out of the 1k.

To quote Johnny Carson: "I did not know that."

That'd work since they could keep the same pattern but they would have to raise their power in order to be a viable AM station in 2007. They'd have to upgrade to 5 kW fulltime (preferably 10-25 kW days - they probably couldn't do more than 5 kW nights) in order to do so.

An increase in power is the only way 860 would be viable to a new owner. I can't see TMISU keeping it regardless since they won't need it once sports is fully established on KTAR, and the 620/860 simulcast ends.

When then-KIFN (or was it KVVA by then?) went fulltime, their 1 kW power and directional pattern was OK since it covered the Mexican-American neighborhoods of areas like South Phoenix and Maryvale quite well. That was OK for a Spanish-language station in the '70s. It won't work today, even if they returned to a Spanish-language format.

10-25 kw D and non-directional would more than compensate for a non-existent ground system. That signal would cover Flagstaff to Tucson. 5 kw night could be a stretch with the existing directional array. But as the Nurse and I said earlier, there's a buyer for 8~sixty...the question is at what price? With no ratings and no ESPN franchise, TMISU's current asking price seems adventuresome.
