What A Joke!

Granted, Dennis wasn't much more than a bunch of very severe thunderstorms but comment must be made about 850AM, which sure runs a lot of promos about how they are the only station for hurricane coverage...only station, where? Last night, as winds blew, heavy rains flew and trees fell, they were running Joey Reynolds...with CNN news - never a mention of anything local. Ok, give 'em break, surely by 5 or 6, they'd start a morning news show...no, Wall Strert Journal show, a real estate show, a divorce show...about two minutes of Neil Grant fumbling around at the top and bottom...nothing from the NHC, nothing from no where except outdated Accu-weather reports (recorded hours before Dennis ramped back up to 105MPH). Now, I'm not sure who their competition is (what market they really serve), but I know WJNO was live and local this morning and IOD was live all night with their top and bottom of the hour reports with their anchors talking with Weather Channel and Channel 10 reporters - they are still live, at this writing, with their own reporters live from Monroe EOC and NHC...taking listener calls about damage reports, etc....Jeez, even the sports guys on WAXY and 560 were at least mentioning the storm. Is it GREAT radio, maybe not, but it's the kind of stuff radio stations do when they promote themselves as a news resource...Look I know 850 doesn't have any news people, but don't they have a deal with SunSentinel? And Channel 6? Why didn't they use them. Why didn't they bring Kelly Mitchell in? JOyce Kaufman? Well....THAT might have been going overboard...anyway...I realize this wasn't armegeddon, but if you're going to say your hot sh*t, at least try to act like it.
Edited by RatchetUp on 07/09/05 02:54 PM.

As Uncle Neil would say "Absolutely correct, sir!" Say what you want to about them - and I have, thank you, on numerous occasions - but CC knows how to cover the big stories. As I understand it from news reports, the owners of 850AM (and others)are embroiled in a number of big lawsuits so it could be they are simply trying to stay on the air so they can sell.

On WJNA or WFTL (which I don't remember) there was the perennial Saturday 8 AM (brokered?) mortgage program. You can't expect James Crystal to give up advertising revenue for hurricane coverage!

Remember WFTL's's pompous promos last fall (I'm paraphrasing) "the only station that could cover four hurricanes ina single month"? ROTFL!!!

Or maybe I'm thinking of Al Bundy, "four touchdowns in a single game."

Same thing. Reliving past glory. What's with these guys?

Everyone knows that this station is a joke. They try to be a Ft Lauderdale station. They are not even a Palm Beach station! They can do all the promos they want. The audience knows where to go. Not to a mortgage show! These guys are in real trouble! Watch them lose their battles in court and have to sell.

Well, I don't understand why WJNO would be live and local during Dennis. The thing came no where NEAR Palm Beach County. I can't even understand why WIOD would be live all night. (I thought maybe they were being simulcast on the CC Key's stations.) What happened? A few trees down? Hell, my dumb neighbors still had their irrigation systems on.

Too much hype by everyone.

I understand why the TV stations were live. Cool pictures and they DO serve the Keys from Miami. But radio? Not at all.

BTW, what does everyone think about the TV/Radio simulcasts? Pretty lame when radio has to simulcast TV. "As you can see from our doppler radio, this storm is...." What a waste.

This is a fact, Jack: WFTL, despite its lack of market focus, provides more, and to my tastes better, local news programming than any other station in town. Of course, it doesn't offer a lot for Miami-Dade but since I live in Broward, there's no real competition (and I certainly include WIOD, a shadow of its former self, in that).
