What about King's WZON?

Hey Fellow Radio Types,

Anyone want to venture a guess as to what will happen with AM620 WZON? Without UMaine sports as a moneymaker, one would think that cutbacks are inevitable. I read that Clear Channel is already wining and dining potential sports broadcasters, especially those that have had a long history with ZON. From what I hear, it appears that those broadcasters are ready to join the CC family.

My heart breaks for Dale, Clem, and the rest of the staff. They are such great sports broadcasters and people. And of course for Steve and Tabby.

I think WZON will pick up Husson sports and put more focus on high school sports. As to the loss of the U-Maine sports I think it's a shame. Several contracts ago I too felt the University games should be on a strong FM station with a larger geographic audience. However, at last contract time I changed my opinion when C C lost because they couldn't included internet coverage along with their on air coverage. It was then that I realized the GREAT JOB being done by WZON and that internet coverage probably has many more listeners than over the air. There are U of M Alumni scattered all over the world and they are getting their games via broadband. I live only 30+- miles from the Orono campus. No I couldn't receive WZON but I can only barely receive WVOM so either way I'll still be receiving U-Maine sports via the internet. I would love to know the estimated audience of Maine Sports via the internet vs. terrestrial air?

they will stream online...

looks like they've inked 96.7 WCME for the Brunswick area and are close to a deal with Clear Channel's Fox Sports Maine cluster and are looking for a Portland/Western Maine station...

as for local high school sports and husson....i'd go for high school (although they've always done alot, some was just moved to their internet only station whitch is probably useless now without UMaine), you aren't going to woo the advertisers with Husson, when they're a small school and they already have coverage on their own campus station

I get the impression UMaine sports was never a big money maker for WZON. I was listening to sister station WKIT the morning after all of that happened and Bobby was saying something to that effect. Can you imagine the cost of broadcasting all of those games from all over the country? If you're billing a hundred thousand on UMaine but having to spend 125,000, why bother? (I don't know how much they bill or spend but those are just some random numbers I picked out of the air.) Any cutbacks...more than likely a board-op or two and of course the guys who broadcast the games. I am sure they are not panicking over at the Zone. I would imagine they are still extremely PO'd at how the negotiations went down. Who really cared about UMaine sports until WZON came along anyway? Your leaving behind a great legacy Blake James, hope you are happy with your new buddies at Clear Channel.
