What About NBC At 12:30 A.M.??

With NBC now having confirmed that Jimmy Fallon will take mover as host of "The Tonight Show" on February 24th (the night after the Winter Olympics in Sochi end), speculation turns to what will NBC do with the timeslot (12:30 or 12:35 A.M. ET/PT) that Fallon is vacating.

I see four options.

One is to have someone host a new talk/variety show which would take over the "Late Night" title. There have already been rumors that Seth Meyers is a prime candidate to host such a show.

A second option would be to create a new kind of low-to-moderate budget entertainment show for that time period (read: one that can make a profit), but not a talk/variety show in the traditional sense.

A third option I can see is to move Carson Daly's "Last Call" up to 12:30 A.M. ET/PT, and expand it to an hour, perhaps with even more music (since "Tonight" is, and will remain, mainly a vehicle for comedy).

But I think the most likely way "Last Call" gets expanded is what I see as a fourth option: "Tonight" expands to 90 minutes (11:30 P.M.-1 A.M. ET/PT), "Late Night" (Fallon's current show) going away, and "Last Call" moving up to 1 A.M. ET/PT, likely expanded to an hour.

Let the guessing games begin!

Oh, What the hell?............a 3rd replay of Kathie Lee and Hoda....lets just put the hour to rest completely

I'm thinking this may be the best option, as going down to just two late-night shows would cut costs.

I read that Seth Meyers is the front funner to take over 12:35AM. So, now we have two Lorne Michaels shows back to back, and of course on Saturday nights.

It would probably make sense to re locate "Late Night" to Los Angeles. After all,the talent pool will be pretty thin with both 11:35 shows out of New York, along with Late Night.

Fallon at 11:35, Seth at 12:35, but Carson Daly doesn't get to move up AT ALL. Is that what NBC is trying to do?

Carson doesn't have Lorne Michaels vouching for him.

This is the key. Lorne is seen as the resident genius, and he will produce the next 12:30 show, regardless of host. In fact, I'd bet it was in the contract when he brought Fallon in for the 12:30 show. Lorne was already thinking ahead.

NBC needs to think ahead. Lorne turns 70 in 18 months. Even if he works til 80, that's just a shade over 10 years. What's the plan for Jimmy, Seth and SNL when the day comes?

The network is putting a lot of eggs in Lorne's basket.

How old was Fred DeCordova when he retired?

The thing about Lorne is he delegates well. He brings a huge staff with him, and they do the heavy lifting. Lorne brings his name and prestige.

81. But he started at 60.

Look, if Lorne can, like Don Pardo, work into his 90s, awesome. My only point is that NBC, which could use some stability, has a host in his late 30s (two, if Seth takes Late Night), but the guy with all the power turns 70 that same year. Statistically, assuming Jimmy and Seth succeed, there will almost certainly be a change in the creative oversight of the shows long before there's a change in hosts.

But once again, this isn't simply a Lorne Michaels production. This is a Broadway Video co-production, and has been since 1993. Lorne is just Executive Producer. Broadway co-produces with Universal. Lots of people involved.

Yes - and I recall that when Lorne Michaels left SNL the first time, that following year under Jean Doumanian was a disaster - the show became unwatchable - but the following few years under Dick Ebersol were excellent. There is other producing talent out there - there's no reason to think that a transition wouldn't be seamless.

Thinking ahead has never been NBC's strong suit in recent years. (See: Leno/Conan, Lauer/Curry...)

NBC will be 7th place next yr watch Tonight Show with Jay Leno is the highest rated show on NBC you do not mess with the highest rated show. Jimmy Fallon is good but I do not think he will even be ready in a yr sorry. Adding Seth Meyers is dumb he sux I can not stand him I know they could find someone better to fill the time slot Adam Sandler would be a better choice come on NBC your making the dumbest choices I have ever seen a major network do I thought Fox made the worst choices now NBC is the worst for that
