What about WMDG AM 1260?

Traveling through the city of Atlanta I happened to tune around near the airport a carrier present on 1260 kHz. This happens to be WMDG from East Point. However, it seems it is another station in the area broadcasting without modulation. They happen to have an excuse since they recently filed an STA with the FCC to go silent as a result of lightning damage. However, they did manage to get a carrier on the air now. Any progress to get the station back modulating again?

Format was Gospel if I last recall hearing the station? This was the former WYXC Cartersville, GA that was on 1270 kHz before moving to 1260 and East Point in 2018.

Can hear them here at spaghetti junction. East Point is a bad section of town. I remember they were vandalized about 5 years ago when they were news/talk format. Maybe that's happened again.

WTJH, owned by Bishop Willis, used to be on that frequency and was licensed to East Point. The station went dark, probably in the early 2000's, paving the way for the former WYXC to move in.

I have no knowledge of this but wonder if WYXC saw the massive amounts of being money spent on Atlanta radio and decided it wanted its share. But an AM (almost) daytimer that covers little of the market is not really the ticket to riches. WYXC would have been better off staying in Cartersville.

WTJH was on 1260 back in the 80s and 90s.. owned by Tobbie Rivers.. they got slammed for double billing.

I worked back there in 1980, crappy station, East Point was ok to go into at that time.

then it went dark

If the FCC records are correct (sometimes the on line stuff is not updated instantly), there is construction permit for a 99 watt translator on 100.1 tied to this station.

IMHO: There are a few obvious uses for this station:

Davis could use this station for his smooth Jazz 101.1 / 100.1.

Since there is overlap from the 101.1 translator he could program 100.1 separately. I guess the 100.1 translator could be upgraded to cover a lot more of Atlanta using the 25 mile rule. I believe it would require a directional antenna but any interference issues north of I-20 would be easily “fixed” since he has 100.1 WNSY. There are a couple of translators that would have to be dealt with (610’s W239AY-FM 100.1 MHz and WVFJ’s W261BG-FM 100.1 MHz Morrow, Georgia) so this could get tricky.

Davis could “swap” 100.1 WNSY Talking Rock and WMDG with the translator for WLJA 101.1 allowing him the run his 101.1 translator without having to deal with the interference complaints from WLJA.

Coupled with WPLO’s 100.1, WMDG would give WPLO some more FM (and AM for want AM is worth) coverage in Atlanta.

Someone could enter the Urban radio wars using the 100.1 translator being a second or third tier player.

The station is owned by Michael Glinter of pensacola, whos simply done talk or religion in the past or leased time.

FWIW 1080 (WFTD) Is Off The Air Too.

That's the Hispanic out of Marietta GA. Its a 50KW Class D. They've had technical problems in the past such as low or no modulation. But it may be a cash flow problem this time. I've never heard any spots on them.
Why do I know this? They are adjacent to the station that I listen to out of Chattanooga WFLI (1070) which is oldies format. So, if 1080 Marietta is off the air, it helps me out a little bit DXing WFLI.

Yesterday, WFTD was 50kw of carrier. Living in Acworth, I am pleased when they take breaks...so I can hear WFLI as well.

Seems to be back on this morning (8/18). Maybe they were just taking a little siesta or maybe they have a coin-operated transmitter and ran out of quarters.

Haha. When I first moved to Atlanta, I did a tour of transmitter sites. I had a map with WFTD's site but didn't see it when I arrived. Then I looked to the right and saw towers in what looked like someone's backyard (although they probably were beyond the backyard).

At least, a few hours ago, 1550 was running non stop, repeating legal IDs. I guess they are appealing to the DX audience?

How About 1010?

Guess the Radio Punjab thing didn't work out for them either.

I must have missed a post or two. I am sure there are others that want know, what is "Radio Punjab"?

It's what went on 1010 after the demise of the talk format with the old 106.7 talkers (Kimmer, et al.)

How long were they Radio Punjab? A week?
I remember hearing them on high power late at night. I'm sure WINS (NYC) liked that!

IIRC 1010 is a "Canadian" channel at night. WINS is very directional at night at 50KW and in the past has survived Canadian signals. WJXL Jacksonville Beach FL and WFHS Seffne FL both are 5KW at night and could try to actually try to run decent programming at night and might have been effected. There are a bunch of "flea" power night stations that most likely got wiped out if anybody listens to a "sub" 100 watt station at night.

I sure they wrecked one of my favorite set of call letters WORM Savanna TN 250 watts daytime and 27 watts at night. I wonder if WORM FM 101.7 "The Worm" has jingles.
