What Am I Hearing on 104.1?

I live in Charlotte County and just got around to hooking my IBOC radio back up. In scanning the band, I expected to find country WTQR on 104.1, but what I found instead was a clear solid signal from WVTF.

Is there a 104.1 translator for WVTF that I'm not finding? Because this signal is pretty strong; stronger than most of the Roanoke stations that aren't on Poor Mountain, and it's wiping out WTQR even though I hear other Greensboro-market stations just fine (WPAW, WGBT, WJMH, WKZL, plus somewhat noisy signals on WSMW, WMAG, WVBZ).

I listened long enough to confirm it's audio from WVTF. Any ideas?

Well, after searching the band some more this evening, I noticed that I can hear WSLC 94.9 on 101.5. I'm guessing it's a problem with the Accurian being overloaded.

I mean, I'm 79 miles out, but I have a roof antenna pointed at Poor Mountain, with an FM trap and two amps in the line. I guess it makes sense...

It's most likely your amps. From what you described it sounds like at least one of them is throwing images of VTF & Star on other frequencies. I've found the more inexpensive amps tend to be worse at this than those who cost a bit more.

I'd try maybe taking one of the amps out of the line (my experience has been that cascading amps most of the time causes more problems than it is worth) or replace the one closest to the antenna with a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA).

Yeah, I figure it is. I'm not too concerned about it; we need the amps for pulling in WBRA-DT on channel 3, so they're not going anywhere.

I also think the receiver is crap (Accurian IBOC receiver from Radio Shack) and that likely doesn't help.

Thanks though...

Hey, Trip! Just started posting on the boards yesterday, though I've lurked for a good little while! Anyway I'm wondering, in response to your post, you can hear WGBT (94.5, "La Preciosa", Spanish) and WJMH ("102 Jamz") where you're at, in Charlotte County VA? I wonder if you can hear those stations okay, given there are co-channels in not-too-far-from-ya Richmond? And what analog TV stations (from NC) are you able to regularly get? Can you get most of the Triad/Triangle stations? Just curious...

My antenna is very directional, with lots of rejection, so it sees quite a bit. I usually hear a very faint WBRF on 98.1 as well, as long as my antenna is aimed in that direction, but it's much too faint to listen to, not that I like country music anyway.

On the TV side, I always have signal from WFMY though it's not usually watchable, and that's it from Greensboro. Turning the antenna gives me 4/5/11/22 from Raleigh (also used to get 17 before WFXR-DT signed on).
