What are Glenn Ordway's options?

Glenn is 62 and set financially for life.

BUT Glenn sounds like someone who at 62 is not ready to retire and is obviously furious at top Entercom management for the way this came down.

He made it clear he does not blame Jason Wolfe for this and pointed out he made a LOT of money for the company.

NOW if this firing had happened 2 months ago I could have seen Greater Media making 96.9 sports with Glenn doing drive - I can't see GM blowing up anything else right now.

NBC Sports Radio is a maybe but Glenn needs to be local to work in this market.

Clear Channel? - Glenn on 1200/101.7 would bring advertisers and perhaps Dale and Neumeier mid-day could bill. Nobody would get rich but local sports has advertisers that can be sold that would never touch political talk.

It is easy to compare Ordway's plight to where Eddie Andleman was in 2001 with his move to WWZN - but Eddie had lost his fastball and Sean McDonough just could not make a dent against Ordway who was king then.

Ordway is not over the hill yet like Andleman and Lobel were at the end. Ordway is a good friend of Matt Siegel which opens the door at CC.

CC could give mornings to someone like Jerry Trupiano who is still local for short money. Overnights connect with FOX Sports and JT Brick.

Food for thought.

Nothing says "has been" or "wannabe" like going to the third station in a format.

Best route is take what syndie/network fill you can for a while. Better a national fill-in
than a sacrificial lamb with a station that has no shot -- and without rights to a team
and all the marketing advantages that go with it, being the third sports station in
town might be a good place start, but it's a death spiral for established talent.

Having enough money means being able to turn down work that diminishes your status.
Doing even temp national stuff (time to build the home studio) keeps you on a certain level
and there are always PBP opportunities, especially for things such as NCAA hoops.
And I believe the current broadcasting veep at the NBA started under Ordway at RKO or EEI,
I forget which.

Which brings me to Radio Rule #3.
Never poop on the people below you. You just might be working for them tomorrow.

And Radio Rule #4
Rising in market size and station status is hard. Falling is easy, inevitable and usually permanent,

And Radio Rule #5
Never confuse working for a property in the right place at the right time with being a
superstar. Milk it if it puts you in a good spot, but don't think it's all you.
(BTW, Boston has had four true Superstars: Jess, Jerry, Charles and Matt. There will never be another.

Radio Rule #6
There are no soiled goods as soiled as the star shown the door.

As for Ordway is moaning that the million dollar salary wasn't enough love:

Back to 'Rule #2
Never believe anything anyone in management ever says at any time.

Ordway said yesterday he was offered a national job and turned it down to stay in Boston radio. He wants to stay in Bos. radio now, too. So now we have 5 sports networks and maybe
he could do fills in, etc there. As for without rights to a team, yes. What we have:

--Sports Hub
--WEEI
--WUFC (NBC, Yahoo, and a few local shows)...no local team
--WEEI's AM side with ESPN. Occasional play by play (they had baseball playoffs) and as for local I think some college games have been aired on there since they split from 93.7.
And they get hashmarks in the ratings otherwise or just, very low.

Suppose Clear Channel decides comedy isn't working and they make 1200 Fox Sports--
and hire Ordway for PM drive, etc. What kind of ratings will they get? Yes he may get
some listeners (as would JT the Brick) but the ratings are averages of the whole day.
We're looking at a "hash mark" or very low. The national ads (and shows) would be
cleared, yes, and they'd say "yeah and we have Ordway". But stuck on AM (unless
they decided to put it on 101.7) and still an also ran. This happened with cons talk--
they did clear ads and shows and even spent money to put Jeff and Jay on, but it didn't
lure enough of an audience. Glenn on 1510, same deal. They may make some $ on national
and even local ads but not the same as being on the big two stations.
And yup, 1510 has no local team play by play and 1200 wouldn't either, if they go
that route.

>>Never poop on the people below you. You just might be working for them tomorrow.

Ralph Kramden, Honeymooners I think used to say "Be nice to the people you meet on
the way up. You'll see them on the way down."

>> I could have seen Greater Media making 96.9 sports with Glenn doing drive

Had they done that we could say, yes, great signal but it would be, what, Glenn
and maybe CC gets them to carry Fox...any $ for local hosts? (Ironically enough some
are saying the likes of 98.5 is a big reason why 96.9 failed--drained away some
listeners). I don't know if having a team's PBP is all-important but it sure helps.

In Cle. they have sports talk on WKNR 850, while CC's WTAM 1100 has all 3 teams
I believe: Tito's Tribe, the Browns, and the Cavs. CBS launched the Fan 92.3 and there was hope they would lure at least one team...well no luck so far, and WTAM gets the Buzzard
(where Donna helped Rush!) 100.7 to simulcast most games on FM. The 92.3 signal isn't the best (unless they move to 98.5) and for all I know they may be doing OK with their hosts, etc. ...but they have no team. Well, THAT is what a Sports 96.9 would have faced had
the Ordway firing happened 2 months ago and had GM gone with sports. (At least one domain name was something like "sportsradio969" and maybe Entercom would have put up a stink about that...)

(btw: http://cleveland.cbslocal.com/station/92-3-the-fan is the site for the Fan 92.3 and it uses the basic
CBS-owned sports station template.)

Well as said before if a 1200 (or 101.7) went all sports you would have FIVE stations in town. The two biggies and the also-rans. Is there enough ad money to be made? And
again I could poss. see CC putting Fox Sports on 1200 or maybe 101.7 but it would be a case of it clears the ads/shows and we don't know what else to put on there...

Take a lesson from PPM and STOP with these long and repetitive posts with no real information or insight. Nobody reads them. Raccoonradio, I'm mostly looking at you. Stop. Please. You're adding nothing to the conversation. Clear, concise, and have a point.

As for the Big O, you won't see him on an AM, that's for sure.

How PO'd is Ordway? Is he a vengeful sort? Next to Muttnansky, Gresh is the sorriest excuse for a host I've ever heard. If they approached Ordway would he do mid-days at a lower salary just to stick it to WEEI? I know they don't need him, but they must be smelling blood in the water.

BTW, I always read your posts racoon, don't let the troll bother you.

He made it clear he was not happy with senior Entercom management ( with the exception of Wolfe )

BTW if Wolfe didn't make the call then why does he have a job?

Short term expect Ordway to show up on TV shows like Sports Final on a regular basis and expect to see him on CSN as well (Felger vs Ordway would be good TV )

I doubt that NESN is an option because of Red Sox and Bruins ownership.

Never believe anything anyone in management ever says at any time.
Glen mentioned nobody said anything to him . It's the way things are done.
My brother didn't hear a word...nothing. The staff took him out a few days later.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I pass along info, with citations for accuracy, correct some wrong impressions and no doubt probably screw up once in awhile myself. I don't think I'm repetitive.
I don't think I'm repetitive. (And as my fellow Lynn Classical alum Glenn would add, "you're makin'
my point!") Oh, and I don't think I'm repetitive.

Wolfe does have duties but some higher-ups may make certain calls. Maybe he wanted WEEI
to go to 93.7 awhile back and got turned down by his bosses, who knows.

>>Nobody reads them.

People do. You must have. Or else how would you know about the content of my posts? :D

>>You're adding nothing to the conversation.

btw I have actually cut back on number of posts recently. All this flattery from folks like
you may make me want to post even more :)

Thanks and I won't consider him a troll cause I'm a nice guy. Rock on, reelyreel! Don't go changin'

Air talent in major markets are hired and fired by upper management. Program directors are more detail-oriented. It's been that way for decades.

I just want to know why the layout on your posts is so odd--one really long line, followed by shorter ones.

Correct. PDs in the major markets are just the "mouthpiece" of the corporation at the hiring and firing stages of the "big money" talent. They may have input, but the uppers have the real, final say. All too many other PDs live on 120v AC current and wear designer clothing that says "Intel Inside" on the label. :)

I know you're always right, but I don't always understand. Who is pebbles and what are his/her metco gorillas?

Pebbles formerly of Jamn 94.5, now with Hot 96.9 (with Melissa)

METCO Gorilla: Dennis and Callahan joked about a gorilla and compared it to a METCO
student. Got suspended.

Wiki under Callahan:
>>The gorilla had escaped from the Franklin Park Zoo and had been recaptured at a bus stop.
Callahan: "They caught him at a bus stop, right -- he was like waiting to catch a bus out of town."
Dennis: "Yeah, yeah -- he's a METCO gorilla."
Callahan: "Heading out to Lexington."
Dennis: "Exactly."
>>METCO is a state program that buses inner-city Boston students to nearby suburban schools. Many perceived the comments to be comparing poor, mostly African-American children to gorillas. WEEI general manager Tom Baker suspended both hosts for two days, then extended the suspension to two weeks after the Blue Cross-Blue Shield pulled $27,000 in ads and in turn donated that money to METCO. Dunkin' Donuts responded by ceasing all advertising that involved the voices of John Dennis or Gerry Callahan

If that happened today, a @METCOGorilla Twitter account would have immediately been created.

I know the metco gorilla story. Does "Pebbles" (still not sure if it's a man or woman) have a similar incident in his/her background?

pebbles is a woman, and no she does't have a similar incident.

I think the point is, pairing Pebbles with Ordway would be like pairing Karen Blake or Nancy Quill with Don Imus. :D
