WEEI has a contract with ESPN currently though who knows, contracts can be broken. But could they get ratings/billings with it, and can Boston support another sports station? It seems like EEI
and 98.5 grab the sports audience with their mostly-local lineups. ESPN can be good for filler,
overnights, and certainly things like regular season and playoff sports (World Series etc.) But the
situation ESPN has is that in many major cities, especially sports-crazy ones like this one,
sports stations tend to go local most of the time and they wouldn't have much space for ESPN shows. And Boston, again, would rather have local hosts talking local sports. ESPN winds up on small and medium market stations, and some big market...They tried ESPN on 890 including a local show
but it didn't work out. 96.9 would definitely have a better signal and could pull in MAYBE something close to what WTKK is doing now with talk. Or perhaps that's being over-optimistic.
What are TKK's options?
--A sports talk network, maybe with a local show or two, like FSR, SNR, or ESPN. FSR currently on 98.5
--Continuing with their current talk which may be going for more middle of the road, younger
listeners currently--hoping to woo Howie away by Sept of 2012. Again yesterday he was saying
"I only have another year and a half and I'll be out of here, to a station where the computers
don't break down"
--Prog talk? Would it work (in a city where WBUR and WGBH and yes even WWZN pull that audience)
--CHurban? Foreign language?
--A variety hits format to go head to head with Mike?
There are probably others too. Ideally if they wanted to stay talk they could hope CC folds
up WXKS-AM and grab a few of their shows. Poss lineup: E&B, Graham, Rush, a good local PM
drive host (heck I'd prefer Katz to Bower), Hannity or Beck delayed, etc.
I'd think WTKK would stay with what they have, lacking a format that might do better. I could be wrong but right now the odds of them going all-ESPN, all-SNR, etc. are about as likely as bringing beautiful music back to 96.9...
