What are you Thankful For?

God has blessed many of us radio folks. This isn't a post for the "religious" board, this is for Indiana regardless of what kind of station you work at.

I spent years doing the Johnny Fever thing then got into Engineering and Management. During this time I was blessed to be around some people who were more than tolerant, showed courtesy and respect, and were decent folks.

Bill Shirk and Bill Mays were great to work for at my last radio "job." Even when I became ill and had health issues they have been a source of Hope for me and my family. Some of the people I have worked with over the years: Michaels, Burbank, Trumpy, Cunningham, Hawk, Wheeler, Hawkins, Gehring, Tony Lamont, Dave Hood, Dave Fort, Norm (RIP), Gary Wright, Cummings, Bell, and others. (In no particular order) All have an inspirational story to tell. Those still alive can inspire you through what they do everyday.

I am thankful for these folks, and for you. End stage renal failure means end stage. As one said "life is not a long term project." Regardless of the time left make the most of your last days and tell those you work with, (and yes this is a messed up business), that you are thankful for what they do. I have some real men I can say "I Love you man" to and mean it. Thank those in your group that ahve mentored tyou and let them know they made a difference.

God Bless you this Christmas season. Be thankful for those that are there. Wife, family, co-workers, all.

Well written Chief...I'll give the Reader's Digest version...when I wake up every morning, my prayers have their share of "Dear Lord Please" words, but the most sincere prayers are the "Thank You Lord" ones. When I think back at all the near misses in life, I would have to say it's a close call between being thankful for the blessings & thankful for the protections. At the risk of sounding "religious", let me say THANK YOU JESUS on this public board while it's still legal to do so.

I'm thankful that when I worked in radio before technology and voice tracking took over. It's a fond look back as I remember slip-cueing vinyl, reel decks and cart machines...and what fun it was to be coordinated enough and have god enough timing to do the perfect seg.

I will always cherish those days and when radio was literally flying by the seat of your pants. You could actually say something off the cuff instead of reading scripts constantly.

As I said on the Cincinnati board...I'm REALLY thankful I don't work for Cumulus...

...or Clear Channel.

Well said ChiefEnineer and God bless you. I am most thankful for my family and the few true friend I have. Their numbers are few but they are people I can always count on. Even though I have never worked in the field I have grown up listening to and loving radio. I have been fascinated with it from the time I was five years old. I used to sneak my transistor radio to bed with me and was in awe of the unique things I could listen to in places that I had never been before. Syndication has since killed that. Now almost 50 years later I am just thankful I have a computer and XM so I don't have to listen to what now passes for radio in Indianapolis. HappyThanksgiving everyone.

I am thankful that I had a long career in radio. Wouldnt trade that for anything. But I'm also thankful that I recognized the signs and moved on to something much more stable. Radio is a young mans game. There comes a time when security and stability becomes the driving force in what we do. The game has changed and I'm just too dang old to play it anymore. ;D

You may not beleive it, but I am a chrisatian myself, so each day and night I thank the lord for the lives and health of myself, my close friends and my radio friends, and mostly my family and girlfriend and her family. I amy complain about religious translators but I am definately a religious guy. AMEN...

You must be reading my mind! I couldn't agree more, & the memories I have of 25 years in radio will always be cherished - it's the one thing they can't take away or consolidate!

Not too many people last for more than 25 years. Is there anybody on Indy radio today who was on Indy radio in the 60s? Maybe Orly Knutson?

Jerry Baker was on WIFE in the 60's as Gentleman Jack Sunday I believe...Is he still doing ball games on radio? Reb Porter...was he on in the 60's as well? I think he still does radio traffic.

Ann Craig (1970's), but she's out of radio now...too bad.

Chief, my biggest memory of Ann Craig was when she did the news for a couple of guys at WNAP going by the names of Doug “Wacker” and Craig “Willac”. She was a good news lady, great delivery. She did good banter with those guys too. After she left, some dude by the name of Bill Moore did the news in her place. What an odd delivery that guy had. I remember his sound being so cheesy that it was awesome. Ever hear something that didn’t fit and it was totally great? The news sounded like one big voice over session. It was the greatest thing I’d heard on the radio in awhile. I was mesmerized by his ability. I can still hear the end line in my head; “For WNAP news I’m BILL Moore (pause for effect) with Wacker & Willac!" It was as odd as hearing Dan Sommers across the dial on ZPL.

You think these kids today will ever be mesmerized by a newscaster’s uniqueness or a classic jocks thumping delivery, so unique that you just have to listen whether you like the music or not? I wouldn't lay money on it.

So Chief, I’m thankful that I had the chance to hear good radio. At these guys worst they were better than today’s jocks at their best. I’m also thankful I’m able to retain all of this useless information, but yet can’t remember to take the keys out of the car before I come in the house. I’m very thankful for that. Thank you God.

Re: "voicetrack" and "Ken Tucky".... I agree with you both... with almost 30 years in radio... and experience in regional ownership and (2) major chains, I got out the hard way.... "budget cut layoffs"... So I am thankful that I had a spouse with a job, no huge bills, and my health. I was a rare one.... never been fired or "budget cut" before.... so I am learning so much in this next phase of my career. Not old enough to retire, but young enough to play the game on my terms...
Thankful that I learned from some of the hardest working and talented people in the Midwest.... Thankful that I have the respect of former co-workers, clients and the community.... and hopeful that somehow, the "reset" button will be pushed on this industry called Radio and no other mass-layoffs will take place soon....
We still have it great in the USA.....but we have to make our own greatness from now on... Thankful that I can at least attempt this!

Some members of Congress - House and Senate both - were asked what they were thankful for, and to a person they were all thankful for their power and positions such as chairmanships. Not one mentioned his or her spouse, children, grandchildren, any family or friends at all.

I am thankful that I am not a politician.

I'm thankful for 29 years in radio and counting.

I have much more to be thankful for, moreso than a job and career - but these are not for public fodder.
