What Are Your Favorite Radio Stations From the UK?

There's a lot of great stations found throughout the UK. Many of us have heard BBC Radio1, but there's a whole host of other stations you might be into
Heart? Kerrang? Galaxy? BBC Radio 2? Absolute Radio? Kiss? BRMB? X-FM? Choice FM? Juice? Key 103? Classic FM? Smooth Radio? Clyde 1? Real Radio? Magic? Red Dragon FM? Radio City? Forth One?

Which stations do you enjoy?

Hi..I am writing from Toronto...I like listening to Gold, Absolute Radio, Radio Jackie 107.8 (SW London), Absolute Classic Rock and Planet Rock on DAB.

Of course BBC Radio 1. DJ's are awesome.

In fact, I was really pleasantly surprised last night while I was watching Comedy Central at my house in NJ, and I saw a commercial advertising Vampire Weekend's cd. And the voice narrating the ad was either Edith Bowman or Sara Cox from Radio 1. (I think it was Edith..)

In London, there is a rock station around 105 that I like, maybe Virgin FM?

Kiss 100 London.

Invicta in the southeast (Kent)

Capital 95.8

Capital AM 1548 Gold

Would Ireland count in this thread too?

There was a station I listened to in the west of Ireland, Spin 103.8 SW.

Phantom FM in Dublin, Today FM in Dublin, FM 104 Dublin and RTE 2FM nationwide.

Hi cartman,
Virgin is now known as Absolute Radio and is indeed on 105.8 in London (1215AM and DAB country-wide). It's format is what we call "Dad Rock", Queen, Free, David Bowie, Razorlight, Red Hot Chillis etc. As for the Vampire Weekend ad, Edith Bowman has a Scottish accent (Mrs Doubtfire) - Sara Cox has a very harsh Bolton/Manchester accent!

I like hearing Edith's Scottish accent, but Sara's Manchester accent is positively repulsive, IMHO. Nothing against the people of Manchester, but she needs to tone that down.

Capital Radio was always my favourite before I moved to the USA, I was never a big fan of Radio One. I must also tip my hat to BBC Herts/Beds and Bucks, doing local full service radio north of London, (plus I contribute to the Early Riser show!).

Chiltern Radio (which serves the same area as Herts/Beds/Bucks) is joining the Heart network, thus losing that local element after the breakfast show.. I think stateside readers know that story!

I like the Galaxy network probably the most.

Also the Kiss network is pretty good.

I liked Beat 106 in Scottland,,before XFM...Now the Galaxy network

Juice 107.6 is good too.

I like BBC Radio Ones music,, but I think their's too much talk..

Would BFBS be considered a UK station, since its a Millitary CHR format... Its really good at serving the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and every where else they are set up,, with providing the troops with CHR music and News from Home...

And for the London Pirates....Passion 91.8, Shine 87.9,,,, 87.7 Heightz FM...
Freeze fm 92.7...95.1 Origin FM...... 104.7 Sub Jam FM.... 100.2 true fm.....100.4 Rinse FM.....

radio caroline...former pirate,,,now on dab...great classic hits station

XFM 104.9 in London...Good Modern Rock station...

I think Oxford has a 107.9 thats pretty good too,, I cant remember the name of it...Sorry..Maybe you guys know it....

Choice fm in London 96.9 and 107.1......Good Hip Hop station

On the subject of Pirates in London,

Don't forget Point Blank 90.2 FM

Yes I forget Point Blank as well as Touch FM 94 and Unknown FM., and 92.8 klash FM and 92.4 DE JA VU FM... although alot of these stations arent on air 24/7 ........ Anyway Passion 91.8-97.9.... and Shine 87.9 and Freeze 92.7 seem to be ran the most professional and are usually on the air, plus they are located far enough from legal stations plus they all raise money for Charities and keep gangsters off the street, and also air Anti Gun Crime PSAs in cooperation with local police.... making them a low priority to Ofcom....

Listening to the live stream for Point blank now.... It seems good and fairly professional... I used to like the former RAW Flex 103.6 too,, but they licensed a commercial station on 103.6 now, so with no empty freq space,, Raw Flex went away about a year ago... They went Net Only for a few months, but decided it wasnt worth it...

With so many pirates in London,,, What keeps another pirate to set up on an Esablished frequency of another pirate and Jam them out??? And wouldnt Hightz FM and Shine 87.9 interfere with each other,, or are they located so far apart that doesnt happen.

Pirates in London are fighting for frequncies all the time! If a pirate is off for more than a few weeks then someone else will switch on the frequency, even if that pirate has been there for years! Then they have to deal with it in order,

1) Verbally, by talking to other pirate
2) Technically, by increasing RF power and squashing other pirate until they switch off/move
3) Physically, removing other pirates transmitter, with the risk of....
4) Getting into a physical battle

Most of the time it's only small time pirates that get targeted and 9 times out of 10, the good pirate wins!

Nothing really, it happens from time to time. But even a low power transmitter can cause severe interference over a surprising distance, so the more powerful station still gets poor coverage. Jamming something out and getting good reception yourself needs 10x power or more, which few pirates could pay for.

And wouldnt Hightz FM and Shine 87.9 interfere with each other,, or are they located so far apart that doesnt happen.
They are actually within a mile or two of each other, and yes there is interference - but actually a decent quality car radio will pull the two apart fairly easily in most places. On a cheap portable Shine covers most of the inner city and east, and Hightz a smaller area to the north.

By the way guys... i noticed that Hightz FM stream is offline for a few weeks now, which I liked them for Uk garage, But I hear they are getting a licensed Community 25 watt station on 87.7 which would play mostly Dance and Urban music as well.... Also,,,, Ice Cold FM is back on 103.0 after like 4 months,, and I know for a fact that Ice Cold got Bullied off their former 97.1 signal,,, I always liked that station, glad their stream is back up... but now Sub Jam 104.7 is no where to be found, and also Origin fm 95.1 seems to have vanished..... As for Passion 91.8 and now 97.9,, they seem to be the friendliest and most professional of most the pirates,, they dont swear on the air, and the presenters are very laid back and friendly... I am online friends with several of the Passion DJs,,, they all seem like very good people, most of which have good paying 9-5 jobs, and have families to support, which i heard one Passion DJ talking about his sons birthday the other day, and kept wishing everyone in London Town a Good morning... Plus Passion always keeps their site and webstream well maintained... this is probably how they have survived so long and sounds like a professional station,,, Point Blank is the only one that has been on air Longer.... I dont think passion has ever been raided because I keep up on this stuff... I know Shine 87.9 and Freeze 92.7 have been raided lots of times. and Passion has or had their TX on the same tower block as Freeze 92.7,, so I wonder why Freeze got their TX confinscated, yet they walked right by Passions....
