Since receiving my Sirius S50 for my birthday, I havnt listened to local radio. Freaking terrible since when I was younger I would do anything to be involved from stunts, to promotions and eventually on-air.

Since, there is TERRIBLE money and the Fort Myers market is very conservative not taking chances and over-using voicetracking technology, I dont think there is a snowball chance in hell I will ever listen to any local station unless someone puts something unique on a sub-carrier.

How can local radio match 120 channels?
p.s. 933flz and 98 rock in tampa still have my attention

What do you mean by "terrible money"? Where in radio is there "good money"? I'm guessing the average PD is getting 45-60K and jocks are around 25-40K? That's not any different from anywhere else.

Money depends on the market. Jocks making closer to the 40K mark are not far off from the country's median income for all workers. While the potential to make a good living in radio certainly is dwindling, especially with the widespread use of voicetracking and automation, the lucky do make a good living. Among the lucky are AM talkers, and FM AM Drive hosts.

Actually, Ft. Myers, for a market its size, has many formats.
Smooth Jazz, both Alternative and Hard Rock, Easy Listening,
Adult Standards on FM, three different Spanish formats
(Tropical, Hurban and Mexican), both mainstream and rhythmic
CHR, etc. It even still has an oldies station, which is
not true of quite a few markets these days.

These might not be the formats you're looking for. But
for a market this size, that's quite a bit of variety. In
fact, other than AAA, Jack and FM Talk, I can't think of any
popular format that's missing in Fort Myers.

Wow! You're lucky. When I lived in Ft. Myers, your choices were WMYR 1410 am or Not much else! Wink FM was beautiful music, as was WCVU 94.something. The only other top 40 station to make an entrance was WLEQ a 3kw FM licensed to Bonita with horrible signal in downtown FM. Wink AM had so much clutter you couldn't stay listening for more than 10 minutes. In other words. That market had more dead spots on your dial than I could count.

Let me sum it up this way: Ft. Myers is one of the only markets that has a "beautiful music" station, and it is ranked #1! That tells you all you need to know...

<<How can local radio match 120 channels?

Does 98 Rock have your attention with the little :05 second "Morgan and Morgan for the people" inserts that they drop between songs instead of 98 Rock imaging? Or is it the morning show that has your attention? Which one is on this month? Is it still the guy I heard on JRR in Orlando doing afternoons last week?

And what appeal does the once mighty 93.3FLZ have? The music is ok, but the morning show is so generic that it can air in any market. They ramble on about 10 different topics every break. It's just a bunch of guys reading the show prep sheets and calling it a #1 rated morning show. I get exhausted trying to keep up with all the "great stuff" they see on youtube and try to explain...over and over...and MJ will be the first one to tell you he was the first one to be on this.

Too bad you can't hear 97x down south. Fisher and Boy have a pretty decent, show and are a little better at and do promo's from one of their houses now and then and post them on myspace. Clever.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong!

Wow, this brings back some memories. WCVU was 94.5, the current home of WARO. There is now a reincarnated WCVU on the air in Port Charlotte (Solana to be precise) at 104.9. It used to be beautiful music too but has since shifted to soft AC. WLEQ was 95.9, before the power upgrade to 96.1 (which of course is K-Rock now.)

Having lived in Naples for several years, the only thing I found mildly tolerable was Beasley's 99X, until they went in a more Active Rock direction.

Before WJBX went alternative (first "Adult", then "New Rock"), the only place you could get (very little) current rock was 96 K-Rock, who seemed to be playing George Thorogood every time I sampled them.

You can bet as soon as XM launched, I was the first at my local car audio shop to have it installed.

WAVV is the juggernaut in that market, for sure. "Music For The End Of Your Life", I like to call it.

Now in Tampa/St Pete, 97X is the only FM I listen to now and again, but XM still gets most of my attention. I also DX Orlando's FM Talker,Real Radio 104.1 for their excellent (though automated) nighttime gold-based Alternative format. (BTW for a short time "Real Radio" was simulcast in Ft. Myers on 101.1).

As far as the Ft.Myers rock stations go, they are so over-processed, I can't listen for more that 5 min without a break. It's like the battle of who can compress more.
So, I only listen to the local stuff is if I'm without my Sirius which isn't often.

how can you say "TERRIBLE money"? that may be YOUR situation....market size makes a difference, sure, but talent makes all the difference in the world. in a smaller market, some are willing to pay to keep talent in their building.

Real Radio's shows were ones that Clear Channel attempted to spread through Florida and parts of the south like Macon, Georgia. It didn't work out though and now the 3 local shows left are just that, local.
