WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FOR 2011?

I'm throwing this question out somewhat early. Everyone bring out your "inner Nostradamus" here. :)

What are your hopes and expectations for 2011 regarding dance music, especially in regards to broadcasting?

Based on 2010, things are moving positively. 92.3 Now in NYC has added dance tracks into their rotations. More dance tunes are entering into the Billboard Hot 100 as of late. Certain events such as the Electric Zoo have picked up in attendance, to the point that for next year they are adding a THIRD DATE! :)

I do hope that for 2011 we do get a dance leaning terrestrial station somewhere. But my concentration and thoughts are about strengthening the product that's out there for more CHR airplay as well as tapping into markets, on a small scale, that can "warm up" to dance music. I do believe once things get even STRONGER for the genre, then format flips from media outlets could lean in our favor. In that sense....NO RUSH.

I also believe that if things can go well for dance music, that the "core" fans can come to some sort of compromise to be, at the very least, acceptant for things and not just flip the gun and get all critical about something or someone just because it doesn't represent their staunch views. We need more fans and with more fans comes more money for these corporations and that's the bottom line.

I do think we will hear more dance on CHR's next year. I could see more "Saturday Night Dance Party" style shows come to play. Things look positive and we can only continue to be as supportive as possible. :)

Thank you,
TS

Expectations for 2011..?
Lets see, Artists are hitting the dance catalog and thats fantastic!
Internet stations are coming up and thats a plus!
I also see that FM stations are starting to play more and more dance tracks..yah, another plus!!

BUT HERE IS THE BUT... they are repeating the same songs over and over and over as if no other songs exist. NOW, thats where the internet stations are leading because they are introducing overseas music from artists and stateside music yet to be heard... SO as long as we have that, it can be embraced by fans, DJs, promoters, managers, clubs, etc...

Electric Zoo, Winter Music Conference, UltraMusic Festival, etc-> Perfect in regards to giving it more access to promotions and fan attendance like you said...!

We dont want to end up falling on our face and going back to square one. New York has fought hard for our "little piece" if you like to call it and its a struggle for Dance Music to continue to stay put firmly. Clubs/Lounges will continue to open and close, no longer will we have the large club such as Pallidium or Studio 54! But if we hold together and fight hard 2011 for Dance will be our year!!

I expect more pop dance songs on CHR.

At least two crossover core dance songs in the Top 10.

2 new breakout acts with a dance leaning sound.

"Pure dance" will continue taking a backseat to the uptempo sound on radio.

Here's what I like to see...

Expanding the BDS Hot Dance Airplay chart from 25 to 40 (BTW the chart is starting to resemble the Rhythmic Top 40 chart sans Hip-Hop).

More Pop/Dance leaning Rhythmics.

The Grammys expanding the Dance category.

More exposure for Dance-exclusive artists beyond the Dance realm, like Inna and Yolanda Be Cool.

And hopefully, a Electronica/Dance music TV channel.

My meager predictions:

Less David Guetta (he's kinda played his sound out..)

More Dubstep and Pop/Rock/Dance hybrids (such as the Cascada..)

You are going to see more blurring of the lines between genres of music, which is great (similar to what happened in the early 90's.)  There won't be a need for a pure dance chart, and it will probably be merged into the Rhythmic, since most stations will probably feature 15-20% of what is being played on "Pure Dance Stations" anyways, similar to what happened when there used to be separate Hip Hop and Rap charts.

From my own personal point of view, I do hope that dance music does become blended with other genres, because it helps to add new sounds to the culture.  Unfortunately, there sometimes seem to be little variations in the music and it begins to all sound alike, and that is what can drive people away from our music.  As an example (and now we are getting in to random programming thoughts) my wife and I drove to LA over Christmas, and she has Sirius/XM in the car.  We listened to BPM and Area a lot on the trip, but at times (especially on BPM), it got rather boring, because songs started sounding too much alike (female singer, electro-house beat...wash and repeat.)  There is plenty of good, popular music that is current, and falls into the dance umbrella that is not the same 4/4 125 bpm house tempo, and yet some feel it's necessary to play an electro house version.  Use the original, it's spices up the station, and adds flavor.

ok, down off my soapbox for that last one.

But in summary, I see 2011 being a great year for Dance music.

Meant to point out the new Cascada track.. It' a bit of a departure to their "usual" sound.

Last thing we need is too much blending of other artists into dance that affects the core music.. . The "CORE" music , Cascada,Armin,Kim Sozzi to Groove Armada, whatever, IS DANCE MUSIC.. Dance music is NOT Hip Hop & R&B remixes.

Not Katy Perry remixes, Pitbull, or Will.I.Am. To me, too much of that is boring. For the guy who posted BPM sounded the same.... Oh.. wait.. The original is better and adds flavor! Not on a Pure Dance Station like BPM! Leave all those "Original" R&B/Hip Hop/Pop songs to Top 40.

wonder what state radiofan lives in? Groove Armada - Kim Sozzi - core? Nothing against them, but not core. Core in 2010 was Guetta, Armin & Kaskade on the club side and Kylie, AnnaGrace and Robyn on the pop dance side.

I agree with the following excerpt from radiofan111:

This is exactly the kind of mentality that is killing radio (separate subject for another thread..) and will continue to make Dance Music based format unmarketable. I would love for you to walk up Danny Teneglia, Razor N Guido, Jason Nevins, Oakenfold, PVD or the countless others that have remixed Pop/R&B/Hip hop tracks for dance music fans, you would probably get shown the door if not punched in the face.

Many (if most all) of the big name "dance music" artist started as remixers, hell Armand Van Helden started out at X-mix remixing Hip hop tracks.

Seriously, get over this stigma that all dance music has to be some unknown artist that you won't find on a 12 year old's iPod. Until you do, dance music will never gain momentum.

Very well said.

I wouldn't tell people to leave, I just really want people to be more open minded.

Maybe I can clarify my comment early about the different versions I said I heard on BPM, I finally remembered which song it was, and it La Roux "Bulletproof". The remix that I heard did nothing for me personally, I felt the original was already a great jam, and it's electro beat would have spiced up the rotation. If a station PD is playing a remix of a song that sounds better or improves on the original I say go for it, but if you are programming a remix just to say you are playing a different mix (especially when the original is a strong dance floor record already) then it's self defeating in my personal opinion. Hot96 has added lots of remixes this year of Pop/Hip-hop/R&B and dance tracks, we have also added songs that we feel didn't need to be remixed because the original was very strong, and got great response from listener feedback (and dance floor feedback from club DJ's.) I know Pitbull records have become overplayed as of late, but he can usually be found on some great uptempo dancefloor ready tracks, like his colab with Enrique this year.

Ok, I have completely forgot what my point is now, but just remember this: when a pop artist like Lady Gaga throws a gift in your lap (a dance friendly song), don't just dismiss it as not "real" dance music; pimp the hell out of it. Tell your friends who may not be much into dance music,"hey you like that new Lady Gaga track, well here's another artist that has a similar sound you may like as well!"

Be a drug dealer for dance music, get everyone hooked on the easy stuff, then hit em with the hard ish! ;D

I don't wish them to leave either, but there's no room for complaints since Dance was not on the radar just a few years ago. I was forced to keep my "uptempo sets" short at gigs, but now its the opposite.

You think a Hip Hop fan goes to the Urban section of RadioInfo and says "Hey, Hip Hop doesn't need Eminem or Jay Z...they're too commercial!" Please. Leave your ego aside.

Well as we get prepared to party and Usher in the new year, I look forward to a new wave of rap that's due to hit in 2011. We're less than 24 hours away from it! I'm excited.

Greetings from Utah, by the way.

Now THIS is what I agree with! And I am a core fan! But really, everyone from core to casual has to get on track here! And it really stinks that there are only 4 stations on this format. MORE needs to be done and change comes with us! :)

We just got a couple new tracks from Robbins before Christmas, and they definitely are a different sound than what they were promoting at the beginning of 2010. It will be a fun year I think!

I am ready for 2011, and to compare things how they are now to when I first started getting into dance music, I would never expect the pop artists to go a solid house beat as their original edit. Wishing all you guys good luck and let's keep getting more casual listeners to enjoy dance music. Peace.
