What causes AM "splatter"?

We have a local, AM 1460 in Cullman, Al., that splatters from about 1380 up to about 1530. They use to not do this, but now they do. It's only during the day when they are at 5 kw NDA.

cheap dollar store radios are also bad about stations bleeding all over the dial.

Yeah, bought a Coby radio from Big Lots a few months ago capable of receiving FM/TV/Weather stations and the FM and TV are crap. The stations are bleeding all over the dial and is not suitable for DXing.

Ugh! Coby radios are crap! Whenever I see them, I think of the marketplaces in Africa where I've seen Coby MW/FM/SW radios alongside such venerable names as "Panaphonics" and "Sonyo" - seriously! All sold for around $8 or $9, so I guess you get what you pay for.

The good news is that the AM reception is alright, and I could get nighttime AM signals with no problems. Just the FM stations are a total mess. If I go out of town or do some DXing, I would just bring a Walkman.

The weird thing about those Coby and other dollar store radios is that if your're in town the signal is TOO strong and bleeds all over the dial but if you get far enough away so that it doesn't bleed, you can't pick up anything. I've noticed that its getting hard to find a cheap radio that has a good AM on it anymore. None of the mp3 players has AM and the little pocket radios usually will only pick up 1 or 2 AM stations at a time. (need my talk radio when I'm out in the yard) My little coby pocket radio will pick up only the closest transmitter but will cover up the entire band, blocking the weaker stations, but I do have a Durabrand Sports AM/FM pocket radio that I got at walmart and surprisingly it has a fairly decent AM band and the FM is OK too and its only $5. Not bad for such a cheap radio. but avoid the Durabrand $5 headphone radio, it doesn't pick up very good and the sound quality is no prize either. I just use it when I mow the lawn.

Does that AM station have HD radio/IBUZ? That could be why it is splattering. It could have increased its power or moved closer to you. Does it splatter on all radios?
______________

Simply avoid ALL Durabrand products! I work for Wal-Mart and I won't even buy the 94 cent VHS videotape either! (I don't even know who really manufactures that crappy line and I work there!)

No HD, since I don't hear the hash. As far as I know they haven't done any upgrades. It does it on all radios, car, home, portable.

I had no problem with Durabrand video tapes. Quality is reasonable.

I can't say the same for their CD players.
______________

I have a Durabrand boombox radio that was given to me. Strangely, it picks up all of the very weak, fringe daytime AM signals in my area rather well. But it has problems with some of the stronger nearby stations. WEAE-AM 1250 is 5K NDA daytime, only a couple of miles from my home, but I cannot tune it on this radio without immense distortion. That does not happen on any other radio I own, cheap or not. And WPTT-AM 1360 splatters all over the dial.

Re: What causes AM \

We have a station in the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol TN-Va market,1090 WHGG. The oldies format is coolbut it seems to drive a little hard at 10kw. There's also a station I like down the road in Morristown on 1150. When I'm around JC and listening to 1150, 1090 wipes it out. I thought for a long time it was my factory radio in my 2004 Toyota Corolla.....

Re: What causes AM \

Who owns that station in Cullman? If it's a mom and pop it could just be that the equipment is old and badly in need of maintenance. Some small stations don't even have a full time engineer on staff. I've worked for one or two. It's a shame when station owners don't care about the quality of their signal or sound . There's one here in small town Tennessee that just broadcasts religion fed in over a dial-up phone line. Imagine what that sounds like on the air! To make it worse there's a loud hum whenever the preacher stops talking as the compressor sucks all the background noise up to peak level. Stations shouldn't be allowed to sound this bad.
