What CBS should do with 610 WIP-AM

Now that CBS won't get WKDN, they should do something else with 610 besides a simulcast of 94.1. They should make 610 AM Classic Country and use it as a sports overflow channel and have the Eagles RT feed there. Many Classic Country stations are on AM, and with 610's huge signal, they would probably do well. They should also put it on 94.1-HD4

Not getting WKDN has zero to do with any plans for 610. The setup they have is fine as is, with no need to do one of the fringe formats that seem to top message board poster wish lists for whatever reason.

Music formats on AM are dead. D-E-A-D! Cost of paying the music licensing fees alone should make one pause. Liberal talk would be another failure. Keeping the sports brand on AM makes perfect sense. I would suggest if PEN ultimately gets out of the Sports business, 610 become a 24/7 ESPN affiliate with play by play.

Why not restore the Singers and Standards format on am 610. Bring back the old WIP AM 610 with Singers and standards. If Singers and Standards can make it in Long Island, N.Y. with 1100 WHLI, and can make it in Barnegat, N.J. with 91.9 WBNJ, why can't this format make it in Philadelphia. What is it going to take in order for this Singers and Standards format to make a go of it here in the Philadelphia market? WIP AM 610, OR WPEN AM 950 would be perfect for the restoration of the singers and standards format. If this format is done right, and I do mean done right, if just might make it. If anyone out there is interested in getting this format back in operation, please don't hesitate to give my friend Frank Ellis a call at 215 338-0546 to help you in restoreing it. If any of you would like to sponsor Frank Ellis with this format on another station, again, please give him a call. Again, why can't we get this Singers and Standards format back on here in the Philadelphia Market?

Because the singers and standards format attracts undesirable demos. 50s/60s oldies would be a better choice. But again I state...music on AM is dead. D-E-A-D.

Right now in Albany, WROW is doing a full-service/MOR format and pulling in respectable numbers (high 3s) and are the highest ranked AM station in that market save for WGY. Granted, there were forces which keep that station successful. WJAS is doing reasonably well in Pittsburgh as well. I wouldn't write off music as totally D-E-A-D YET on AM. My advice would be to include 'contemporary crooners/croonettes' such as Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Harry Connick, Jr. and the like as well as the older fellows. I might also suggest adding some more contemporary light jazz. For revenue, I might suggest holding both concerts and dances which feature a live jazz or 'big band'.

610 is the perfect spot for sports radio since the AM signal will be used for St. Joe's basketball, Philadelphia Union soccer, etc. without harming the bread & butter sports talk on the FM.

"bread and butter sports talk" hit the WIP experiment right on the head. All bread and butter..NO meat and potatos. The day this current CBS braintrust does anything that resembles good business sense, will be the day they announce the 100% dedication to CBS outdoor. ;D

Don't let the overall numbers fool you. Magic does not do well in the sales demos.
I bet that crap rock station with no ratings they put on 100.9 (when Magic got moved to AM) has lower overall ratings than Magic did on FM...but still bills more.
Seriously. I have to agree. Music on AM is DEAD.
