What Citadel Should Do With One Of Their Stations

Re:Galaxy Boi

what I'm thinking is Farid's days are limited. 'Jayne' just might be an example of the trend for the future. Whether it's voice tracked or she's on as a real jock, it doesn't matter, it's still different. It makes you think, not ...expect. Something other than, the usual crap that you hear, the 'all your favorite' stuff. As I mentioned before, I know this girl. I've had conversations with her, and I know what's most important to her professional beliefs. She's told me that what is most important to her, is to 'change up' radio. In fact I've heard her say that she'd walk away, if she couldn't make a difference in what people are listening to. A bit of a rebel, she is, but I believe she's really passionate about her love for the business. I think she Would walk away, before she'd become a conformist, at this point. Funny thing, even though I paid her more than I felt I should have? I think she's right. I believe Farid is done.

Farid? Be Afraid!

The biggest reason that Farid might not be done is that nobody in their right mind wants that job. What hope do you have of cleaning up the mess that he's created? Whatever happens next ain't gonna be pretty. You want to be the guy that replaces the guy that replaces Farid.

As far as Jayne is concerned, she's a female version of John Tesh, without the Amway ads. She sounds as canned as Spam. Like Spam, there are a few tasty bits, but the overall experience ain't Delmonico -er Grade A Choice. Put a decent local jock in that position, promote them as much as they promote Jayne, give them the same opportunity to entertain, and they could beat Jayne like a drum.

Can she beat Rachel Marisay's VT on Y94? Not unless there's another compelling reason for Y94 listeners to move the dial, or they can figure a way to get 4Kw to have the same building penetration as 100Kw. There ain't enough substance there to make a significant difference. Jayne's a better VT, but not enough better to make a difference on a music intensive station without a lot of OUTSIDE promotional help - and we all know how likely THAT is to happen with Citadel's current money troubles.

IF this Jayne person is the person who's doing the bumpers and imaging at Mix 104 in Buffalo, she's merely OK. She has that "big smile," "girly" imaging voice that borders on being over the top, almost a caricature... the kind of woman's radio imaging voice The Simpsons would feature coming out of the radio while Homer is driving Bart to the orthodontist. She's good in a Cosco kind of way, but there are probably a few dozen just as good and a few dozen that are better. Such is the state of radio these days; merely caulk that fills space between the songs.

Cold Day in ...

Just wait until the day "Jayne" is babbling away about going to the tanning salon on a day when Syracuse is being battered by one of the annual Rt. 81 blizzards...

Re: more jayne

You two 'wannabee, washed up has beens' should be ashamed of yourselves. Here's a girl seeming to try to do the best she can, with what they are giving her and you're acting like scorned women. Have you actually gone to her web site and looked or listened?? She's got a long list of credits. Looks like she's also the voice of P.Diddy's spots along with a lot of other national accounts. What I hear, when listening to the things she talks about on this show, is a positive and different kind of attitude that she tries to spread over the airways. You two should stop being so negative about her, citadel, and the rest of the people that are just trying to survive in this business. I mean does anybody go to your job and and tell you how to make the fries? You both seem like people that tried but couldn't make it in radio.

Made it?

Please. Stop. Your killing me.

If you had any clue about who you were talking to, you'd realize how funny that is.

YOU'VE "made it in radio"? Please, fill us in on the details. Give us a clue as to YOUR exalted position. Your total of 5 posts - all hyping "Jayne" - don't give us much of a feel for your "expertise". They make you sound more like a Citadel shill trying to stir up a little free promo for your latest Voice Track Goddess.

Jayne may be big news in The 'Cuse. Out her in the rest of the world, she's just another decent voice.

Okay. I’ve stayed quiet in this discussion, watching the fireworks between Steve and Sir Roxalot. I can’t keep my mouth shut anymore…

Steve. From your posts, I assume that you are nothing more than a listener to radio – you have never worked in the industry, nor do you follow it closely. In this business, you are what we call the typical listener – not caring where your radio product comes from, whether it be voicetracked, syndicated, or local. To you, as long as Jane is entertaining, it doesn’t matter. To you, she puts on a good show, you like it, enough said.

But other posters on this board are more than just casual radio listeners. We live and breathe this industry. Some of us believe that local programming is the way to go. I can tell you now that Jane is not local. What worries some of us is this, steve: What if there’s a big traffic problem in Syracuse? What if there’s a winter storm warning for CNY? As good and as entertaining as Jane might be, Jane, er, uh, Robbon Marcial, based in New York City, is not going to deliver that info. This is because she is voicetracked, or prerecorded the day before. However, because you are a casual listener, Steve, you may not have known that she was prerecorded.

Steve. I want to address something you said to Element 9 and Sir Roxalot. You said: “You 2 should stop being so negative about her, Citadel, and the rest of the people who are trying to survive in this business.”

Okay. Let’s take that opinion to the next step. Ryan Seacrest, you know, the American Idol dude, has a radio show that is displacing local DJs all over the country, and he’s heard locally on “Nova” WWDG (105.1.) So, should we not be negative about him because he is surviving in radio? Maybe he provides a different kind of radio, too?

Steve. Some of us posters on this board, to you, seem to be negative about the state of radio today. We say these things not because we’re bitter, washed-up wanna-bes, but because we know that Cookie Channel and S**tadel can do better than a voice in a computer, piped in from New York or LA. Some of us remember listening to radio when there were all local DJs on all day, and we believe that all local all the time provides better service to listeners. Some of us are sad to see people who live, and, well, worked, in radio right here in Central New York (and anywhere else) being laid off at corporate’s behest so they can replace said people with affair such as Ryan Seacrest, or, even, Jane.

It’s that simple.

Busted again! Dude, you got me figured out. Guess I'll have to go back to working my day gig on the housekeeping staff of the StickySheets Motel in beautiful downtown Depew.

Re: more jayne

Obviously Elements real name is Richard, and you've already been replaced by outside talent in the job you are referring to, and Roxy sounds like a fired ex jock who still has the itch. However, it was refreshing to find someone on this thread (the kid) who is intelligent and compassionate and actually has something to say.

Yes, you are right, I am just a listener who enjoys listening to Jayne, and after all, isn't that what citadel is trying to do, appeal to listeners, like me, so i'll continue to listen to her, tell people i know to also listen to her and the end result of that should be to frequent the advertisers on this station--bottom line, right. the station wants to make money.

so, your first paragraph is right. But i am who Jayne is targeting, not those other two idiots who appear to have a grudge against her bosses, if these two posters are not your average listener, like i am, than why are they continuing to listen unless they have another agenda.

In response to local problems, isn't it possible to interrupt Jaynes show for a minute to announce a major traffic problem or a winter storm warning, I mean they could even let sirlotsofrocks call it in and he could get rid of his anger issues. After all this would resolve your local issues and you yourself said Jayne is entertaining--well, isn't that what it's all about?

Why begrudge a Ryan Seacrest, again, if he gets listeners and is entertaining, why be negative, obviously, if he or Jayne do not get any listeners or ratings, than they will most likely let her go--my point again, isn't $$$, advertising the bottom line-radio is a business, they are giving it away for free, doesn't cost you anything, you have the right to not listen, just push the button and change the station.

Your last paragraph says it's that simple...but it's not--like any other business, people are hired and fired, not always fair--but if you or the others are not happy than maybe you should get involved, apply for a job and work from the inside and try to fix things at station level.

But Jayne, it appears, was hired to entertain and she's doing a good job, she should not be blamed for the firing of whoever she replaced.

It's effing LITE ROCK. Elevator rock. Meak and mild classic rock. Who cares where it comes from, you listen long enough it'll put you to sleep. As far as local weather and traffic disasters, don't worry, when the meteor hits there's still live local traffic and weather related alerts. And by the way Jeremy "The Radio Kid" who cares where your nickname came from! It should read Jeremy The Over Emphasizing Radio Geek!

Just a Listener?

"Steve" is "just a listener" who went to all the trouble of finding Radio-Info, and signing up for an account just so he could tell us how much he likes "Jayne" on a radio station targeted at 25-54 females.

Not only that, but it almost seems like he's been talking to the management at Citadel (Clear Channel, Cox, Entercom, Saga, etc.) about how they're considering cutting costs by syndicating people like "Jayne" and Ryan Seacrest. It's almost like he's been drinking deeply at the corporate Kool-Aid stand about how "great" syndication and voice-tracking are for listeners. Either that, or he has a vested interest in "Jayne's" success.

The only bit that isn't corporate-speak is "if you or the others are not happy than maybe you should get involved, apply for a job and work from the inside and try to fix things at station level." "Steve", I hate to tell you this, but the problems aren't coming from the station level. Corporate is calling the shots now. Things like Citadel MANDATING the dumping of ALL 7-Midnight jocks - regardless of their profitability. What are the odds that "Jayne" is being given a try-out in Syracuse - where Citadel has little to lose - to see if she might be worth syndicating in other AC stations?

Local management isn't being given choices, they're being given mandates. Even very successful stations that have been cash cows for Citadel are being sliced and diced. Existing agreements about vacations, comp time, overtime, and even pay scale are being "rewritten" by management. Everybody is affected, in programming, sales, engineering, promotions, support staff, and local management. The only people who aren't paying the price for corporate's stupidity in overextending themselves during the consolidation binge are the people AT corporate.

"Working from the inside." HAH. At this point, the only "inside" is inside the head of a few beancounters at the top who couldn't program an iPod, let alone a radio station.

PS - Welcome to the board, "Steve". I only have one question: Which am I? A wannabe, washed-up has-been, or fired ex-jock? Make up your mind - or have your minders make it up for you.

A regular Kreskin you are, bro. Two for two. Yes sir, Miss Cleo would be downright envious! "Richard" works for me as long as you pronounce it "Ree-chard." It has a certain je ne sais quoi. Keep slingin' 'em. You're doin' a heckuva job, Skippy

Re: just a listener

Actually, if you look at my first post, I told you,

1. it was my girlfriend who told me to listen.

2. all I did was ask a simple question and you all got very defensive.

3. I never mentioned syndication, you all did.

4. I don't talk to management, but you said they are dumping 7 to midnight
regardless of the fact they are making money. this doesn't make any sense
, just not good business, where do you get your info.? maybe you are in
management and using these boards to stir the pot--you seem to know a lot
about there inner schemes.

5. As far as your p.s.----pick one.

You know, it's just possible that several of us are IN THE BIZ, and know what goes on inside radio stations. As far as management making moves that don't make any sense is concerned, you might have stumbled onto the source of our discontent.

Enjoy Jayne. If she does big business in Syracuse, you might be able to hear her at Citadel AC stations throughout the country.

Hello boys and girls. I've been away for a little bit, it's nice to see no more Jayne bashing and maybe you will all start to get along. I know we are all waiting and anticipating Tuesday, we need to remember times have changed, radio is big business and it is around to make money not to have fun , even though Jayne is fun, if she doesn't make them money, she's gone, a lot like sports, big business, not for the fans more for the bottom line. how can we fix it, except for the few , like you people on this board, the suits don't think it's broken, they forgot how to have fun .There are many hidden agendas in the corp. world. When I was a lot younger I was asked what I wanted to do for a living. I said "when I grow up I want to be a d.j.---I was told, you can't do both!
