What Cities Are Like Buffalo?

White Hot Rivalry

Ah, but "white hots" are not unfamiliar in the City of Good Neighbors. There's an outpost of Reid's (famous for white hots in Niagara Falls) just north of the city line in Kenmore, and many other "dog bars" in the city that char-broil them regularly. That, of course, is key. REAL CHARCOAL.

Wardynski & Sons, who now produce Shelly's hot dogs using the original Szelagowski family recipe, also produce white hots that are widely distributed locally.

As far as a "garbage plate" is concerned, I bow to The Flower City for that particular delicacy. I will have to make my way to Nick Tahous next time I head east.
 
While we're on the subject of inter-city rivalries, we could get on the subject of frozen custard. There used to be a battle as to which city had the best, Buffalo or Rochester.

For the hell of it, WBEN's newsies once did a semi-scientific blind taste test, sort of like a precursor of a Bobby Flay Throwdown, with Anderson's frozen custard from the Sheridan Drive location representing Buffalo, and Abbott's from the Charlotte location at the foot ot Lake Avenue near Ontario Beach Park representing Rochester. To keep it even, we limited it to chocolate flavor, the most popular at both stands.

The judges were staffers at our neighbors in the Elmwood avenue building, WIVB/Channel 4.

Proved nothing, it wound up in a tie.

We followed up with an internal newsroom blinid taste test of our own, with Kevin Gordon adding to the mix by bringing in some from the original Don & Bob's in Rochester.

That one ended up in a three way tie.

Jeff Kaye offered to break the tie--but then said he liked them all.

Buffalo or Rochester for the best frozen custard? Guess we'll never know......despite the best efforts of Buffalo's broadcasters to resolve the issue.
 
I love that this blog has "stayed" on the topic of radio. Oh well, not to be outdone, I was glad to see "Bill Gray's" move to the Buffalo area!

You don't get those wonderful ground round sandwiches, normally, here. In Rochester, there is "Don's Original"(the best), "Don and Bob's", "Vic and Irv's", "Tom Wahl's", "Jim and Ralph's", "Schallers". Did I leave any out?
 
Buffalo speak

I love it Buffalo has it's own language compared to the rest of the country.

In Buffalo it's "Frozen Custard" while elsewhere it's "Soft Serve".

In Buffalo it's "Pop" while elsewhere it's "Soda" some places it's all "Coke" no matter what flavor.

Before I get flamed I'm not making fun. I really find it interesting. Can anyone think of other examples of Buffalo Speak?

They also have a place in Gates.
