What commercials do you hate the most?

We all have commercials that we love and others we hate.

I'm wondering what commercials do you hate so much that you hit the button as soon as it comes on?

On the flip side...what commercials do you like and enjoy, if any?

A few radio ads come to mind.

First are the local commercials with the not-from-Boston "actor" doing a horrific accent and squeezing in the word "wicked" whenever he can. The only one I can remember is one for a local bank, maybe East Boston Savings? It's just pushing it a little.

Then there is the other local commercial for Verizon wireless. It's a man-on-the-street piece and a young women, OBVIOUSLY from Boston, says, "Boston, get Verizon Wireless. 'Cuz it's the best! Trust me." Something about her irks me. And I don't want to trust her and I don't want to get Verizon Wireless. Just because of her.

The not so local ad is the one for Nestea, where the young couple are on a blind date and she offers him a Nestea and every time he goes to say something intelligent and complimenting to her, he takes a sip of Nestea and instead of telling her how happy the date is working out, screams out over the effects of what the Nestea is doing to him. It's just a dumb ad, in my humble opinion.

There's one that bothers me - it is for American Express Open and it involves some woman saying that her company was awarded a contract at the last minute late on a Friday and that they needed to immedidately staff the project with people all over the country. For some reason, her biggest problem is getting expense account credit cards to these new employees by Monday. Maybe it is me but wouldn't her biggest problem be hiring a bunch of people over a weekend and have them report to work on following Monday morning?

"Bob Stores" Radio and TV hate them.
Any well produced Movie spot, I like.

There is a fairly long running commercial that has been used widely by the owners of WEEI/WRKO. It is the dog food commercial where Pete Shepard's dog, Peter Blute's dog and a few other's dogs were all lax and had stool issues. Nw their dog's ate this science dog food and now they are just like when they were puppies. Not to mention the stool movements are fewer and better!

What do I hate about these commercials? 2 things:

1) THEY READ THE SAME SCRIPTS!! It probably reads "Him I'm (insert name here) and my dog (insert dog name here) has been eating the blah blah for a month now and I can't believe the difference etc etc etc"

2) Is there such a minute number of listers that listen to multiple radio stations? Reading the same script verbatum...they believe that we are that stupid not to realize? It drives me crazy!!! I don't care if every dog ate it and had a wonderful experience...but for *(&%()*#$%'s SAKE vary the script a tad?

I loathe any commercial spots read live by the host, especially when I am fooled and I think the show is back from break. Highlights include "Perfect Smiles", Shom-a-knee (sp?), and yes, that Verizon Wireless one. Minuteman Support Services ' spot is particularly awful.

Since this is a family site, I can't say what I *really* think of those bald with pony-tail furniture hockers.

Another that I hate/hated

Eddie used to read on WEEI (Howie does it now) about replaceing his winshield. Every few months Eddie would have yet another lame, fake reason why him or his wife needed a new winshield. It was so stupid!

You forgot #3: we don't give a bleep about their dogs, let alone the bowel movements of their dogs.

I really despise the new spots that NBC runs for their prime time shows that are set up so it sounds like we're eavesdropping on "regular" folks who are talking around the water cooler about the terrific new NBC show that's on tonight. They sound so contrived and phony.

On the local level, The Pride Auto Group commercials are a good example of why business owners should not be allowed to do their own spots. The guy sounds like he just got here from Ellis Island.

Any commercial voiced by the in-house guys on WBZ. Stupid/annoying!
(Now, where is Post Road Carpet located?) GMAB!!!!!!!!!

Any company that claims to be "passionate about basements" !

The "Skin Zinc" idiots.

more to follow!

Re: Giant Glass Re: What commercials do you hate the most?

Bob's Furniture... on TV too!

all the PSAs on Progressive talk, as FCCfight said... especially the "Passing Gas" and "It Takes A Man To Be A Dad" ones...

any of the one's voiced on WEEI, especially the dog food ones and the ticket agency ones...

the homophobic ads run by the Pawlik's overnight on WBZ...

Re: Giant Glass Re: What commercials do you hate the most?

I get annoyed by the basement water-proofer who says "I'm passionate about basements. But, it's not basements that I am passionate about." Nothing like paying for a radio spot to contradicting yourself.

There is another company...I can't remember the name off the top of my head...but, they say "Hi, this is Jim from XX Company. we've been under the same name for 32 years, (insert similar, but different name like XX Industries)."

Aargh.

Re: Giant Glass Re: What commercials do you hate the most?

The only two phone numbers that I can think of after reading this thread are 1-800-588-2300 and 1-800-54-GIANT. If you can't identify these companies, you need to watch more TV.

But I would like to cite one good local advertiser, though not from this area. There's this chain of liquor stores out in Vegas that go by the name of "Lee's Discount Liquors". In the clearly low-budget ad that I saw, the owner's son, Kenny Lee, tells viewers how his father has just given him the stores, and that he has renamed the chain to "Kenny's Discount Liquors". Meanwhile, his father is in the background watching the whole thing. As the ad ends, the sign saying Lee's Discount Liquors outside of the store is shown, but Kenny is holding a small piece of paper in his hand that perfectly covers up the word "Lee's" with "Kenny's". The father walks over and snaps the piece of paper out of his hand...

Hard to explain, but if you saw it for the first time it's hilarious. And it sticks in your head positively, unlike that 1-800-MATTRESS crap. And if I was in Vegas again and need to buy liquor, you know where I'm probably going.

The radio ads for the American Fedration of Teachers used to make my blood boil. Sandra Feldman, the group's president at the time, talk about whatever issue was on the organization's radar at the time, giving her view in a perfect, common sense delivery that could make you question your own views if they weren't the same. Other groups do that same semi-political advertising nowadays, and it bugs me no less.

Anyways, bringing it up to speed, Sandra Feldman recently died. Cancer, I think it was. In reading her obituary, she appears to have been quite the activist, responsible for much good in her particular neck of the universe.

I still hated those ads, though.

I also hate any ads from lawyers, such as Dane Shulman. They don't do much to counter the perception of lawyers many people have. That being said, I'd sure hate to be in a courtroom for ANY reason without one.

Anyone remember the radio ads from Nynex or Bell Atlantic with the woman calling her father after some sort of estrangement? It was a series of ads, like a soap opera. I liked those, for some reason. Maybe I'm just a sap.

I'd swear thats the same soggy-basement-miracle-worker outfit who can be reached at 1-800-BUS-YDOG. These commercials are so mind-numbing that they start to melt together.........

Other offenders: The computer services outfit spot voiced by Braude on 'TKK....amateurish copy augmented by Braude's bored-outta-his-skull delivery.

As a genre, the "Make a Million in Real Estate" ads such as Dolph DeRoos and his "Engineered System" yada yada yada.......somebody call the Bunco Squad...also the "Asset Protection System"..blah blah blah.....and ANY ad involving Inventions....lock up the debit card!

Anybody else think Ernie Boch Jr. sounds just like his pappy???? Scary!

That Charmanie Junesse (sp?-who cares?) must be the Mother's Milk of the Soccer Mom set - so many air personalitie's wives/moms/girlfriends/nieces are slathering this stuff on and crowing over it! Really annoying - and the Christmas-season sell-a-thon is just weeks away!

Great thread - keep 'em coming!

Pass the machine gun......

...."LISTEN CAREFULLY!"...yes, you too can OWN a dumpy hotel room in ORLANDO! rat ta tat tat! (collapsing sound). "'Were making enough money during the life of your loan to charge closing costs!" rat ta tat tat! (claspin' sound as HC would say) ;) See YA

HOW COULD I HAVE FORGOTTEN!.....

...(bringing rocket propelled grenade launcher to shoulder and aiming...) "Hi I'm Rockey Mozel"!.... BOOOOOMMMMMMBBBBBBB! Vaporising Complete! Thank me later! See Ya! ;)

Mine too. The general theme was if we throw more money at schools the world will be a better place. I'd wondered what happened to her.

Another ad that annoys me is the NECA (National Electrical Contractors)/United Electrical Workers ones. Guy with the Brooklyn accent chewing the other guy out for not hiring union electricians to do his job.

Which brings up a different point...all the lame clichès that get used in client-written copy. "Conveniently located", "you've tried the rest, now try the best", "helpful friendly staff", and my favorite "at these prices you know they won't last long". Any others?
