Could be a backdoor way of getting these songs (some of them, anyway) back on people's radar.

A very encouraging thought. All good songs to me! I was surprised that the station acknowleged the fact that DJ's don't pick songs - this is still very much in the public perception of the job. In fact, if you've ever played around with iHeartRadio, when you "Thumbs Up" or "Thumbs Down" a song, the message reads "Great We'll Tell Our DJ'S" or "We'll let our DJ's Know You're Sick of This Song" or something along those lines. Even with iHeart's custom mixes, which are obviously not even real stations with any employees - I laugh almost everytime. Just funny how CC fuels the public's incorrect notion of the job, whereas this CBS article admits to some of the real "going on" in picking a playlist.

That is definitely true for formats that play currents. That is both intentional and desirable, as listeners to those formats want to hear today's big songs "every time" they tune in.

But it is also not at all true for most of the gold played on both current-including formats and those that play no currents at all. Those stations generally don't play songs more than once a day, particularly if you consider that late night and overnight play "doesn't count" because many stations "recycle" in those time periods.

The average listener in a PPM market listens a mean time of around 12 hours of radio a week. The bell curve includes most listeners at somewhere between 4 hours and about 20 hours a week. So, for most listeners, songs are played once every few weeks on gold based stations because they are not listening the other 150 to 160 hours of each week.
