What Dan Yorke told a listener today

At about 12:20 PM today, Mr. Yorke told a caller after a very brief conversation, "You can kiss my ass"! Dan then quickly hung up him. You armchair PD's, what do you make of that? Is telling a listener of your radio station to "kiss my ass" appropriate? Please share your thoughts.

I would have to have heard the call & exchange to make a full analysis. I have heard Dan do this previously and 99% of the time, it was warranted. At times, I wish other hosts would do it (especially when listening to some calls on WEEI or 98.5). Matt has taken to hatcheting some callers lately and I have like it as it was appropriate as they sounded like "plant" calls from candidates.

so wknd, it's your opinion that sometimes it's OK to tell a listener, "kiss my ass"? I wonder what Dan would say if he were in the deli section of Stop and Shop and some clerk thought he was a bit too demanding and said, "hey pal, kiss my ass"! Do you think he'd object?

I like it. It shows that the guy has a pulse. If the remark wasn't warranted than the only one who will look like an ass is Dan.

I'd have to have heard the reason for the remark, but Dan isn't working retail or customer service. What a clerk at a deli counter is allowed to say to a paying customer is a different matter than what a talk show host is allowed to say to someone who doesn't even have to be allowed to be aired. He's been at WPRO long enough to know what to and not to say. What's appropo for one station may be inappropriate for another. Talk show audiences thrive on this stuff anyway.

Agree with Sky & RR. While it may not be the most effective way to communicate, it has us talking about it.....

Yak, completely different situation. I believe the situation involved Dan having an opinion on the story in yesterday's ProJo where Caprio and/or some intermediaries approached John Robataille to drop out of the race and the reaction that many RI Democrats had to Dan's opinion. It seemed to cross over to today's discussion and Dan hinted at the reaction he got yesterday afternoon and then after having John Robataille on his show this afternoon were polar opposites. My guess is that the caller called into question Dan's development of his opinion that the story rang true and that the caller felt Dan was using his show to sway the vote on Tuesday....how close am I seeing as I didn't hear the exchange?

It is my opionion, you NEVER tell a listener to "kiss my ass"! It demeans the product and demeans the caller. The station that bills itself as "Your station of record" should not stoop to this type of language directed at a caller.

This is no longer your parents WPRO. Telling a caller to kiss your ass during the Salty Brine era would have got the host fired. However.... telling a caller to kiss your ass in the year 2010 causes a good chuckle.

Yak,
I enjoy your opinion. It is spot on in most cases; but you haven't answered the question I posed seeing as it appears no one but yourself here actually heard the exchange....what led up to him telling the caller to kiss his ass-what was the conversation about? What did the caller say up to the point of Dan's statement. In a vacuum, you are right; Dan's statement is bad. Give us the context and tenor of the conversation.

It was a rather mundane conversation at first, I was only sort of half listening. The caller very calmly in normal tones just disagreed with Dan. It was not contentious, the caller just had a different point of view. The topic is not top of mind now, because it was more of Dan's inside baseball stuff. Then Mr. Yorke went into a rant shouting, "I am not for sale! I am not for sale!" He was like screaming at this guy, then said, "You can kiss my ass!" He then just hung up on the guy. It just made me uncomfortable. This is an AM station that skews to 50+ listeners. No it's not my fathers WPRO, but I don't think an older mature audience would appreciate that. Is it necessary EVER? I say no. Please don't tell me to kiss your ass.

PS

Dan says he's not for sale. Well I wonder how many politicans he's sold on the consulting company he's started?

Yeah sure... Dan doesn't think he's for sale? LOL... If a different radio station offered him a $50,000 raise in salary, take a wild guess at what would happen. There would be no more Dan Yorke show on WPRO. Dan is just as much for sale as the next guy.

Oy veh! Radio talk show hosts do and say rude things constantly, and have for decades. Was it nice of Joe Pyne to tell someone to "go gargle with razor blades?"

Obsessing over one particular guy who told a caller to kiss his ass is ridiculous. It reminds me of the old fussbudgets who used to call and complain every time a host made a grammatical error. Chill. 8)

It's just sour grapes from somebody who obviously has a grudge against WPRO and the Trail in general. Yak's history of hate is well documented in the history of posts....

It's not hate I assure you. I just think for a station that holds itself out as the premium talker in town, it's in very poor taste. Mr. Yorke might be a very nice guy for all I know. It was just WRONG to tell a caller that. Just my opinion.

Yak, they are the only talker in town that talks local. You cannot in clear conscience count HJJ as they are only local with Helen's show and she is normally focused on national issues (Arizona, Health Care, Immigration, etc). From what you say (and you admit yourself that you were half listening), he had a caller get to him. Whether the caller deserved it or not, it won't be known because no one else on the board heard the exchange. It happens to everyone.
