What did you do for work as an unemployed DJ? We've all been there...

What havent I done when I was unemployed?

At different times, I managed a movie theater, a bar, and a record store. I delivered pizza and worked in a group home. I was a substitute teacher and a security guard. Once for a brief period I even worked in a daycare center.

Lipring Johnny, lipring!!! I don't have the "herp!"

Very well edited! Tells the story and fun to watch for the whole 10 minutes.

And Delilah kissing a horse's ass (I'm referring to the statue, not one of you!!) as a finale was worth the entire 10 minute investment!!

Glad you had fun. Ya mind if I share the "we backed it into a rock" with the Penske insurance people?
I also could use a few bucks as an unemployed jock.

Well first, we go to hell.

Second, we pick ourselves up and return to Kinkos, update the resumes, edit together a new aircheck tape/CD and mail those suckers off to everyone.

Third, we find something to do in the meantime while we're waiting for someone to bite. For a dedicated radio jock whose never had any career other than radio, this can be tricky. You can freelance your voice, TV/radio ads, automated telephone menus, books on tape ("This is 'The Joy Of Sex'....read by (insert downsized jock's name here)", etc. You can also branch out into other things like appearing on Survivor episodes (where getting voted off is usually the best thing after two episodes with these freaks.)

It's just too painful for a radio jock to watch daytime TV and watch normal people live. That's the worst part of it. But you can make it. Just keep at it......

I did much of the same, except the substitute teacher and daycare (I don't like dealing with any other kids but my own.) and security guard. I managed a self-storage, a plant farm, a record store ("Ummmm...I dunno, we get a lot of these pristine stereo copies of Introducing The Beatles on Vee-Jay...I...say....two bucks"), bartender and web design. Currently, I manage property and deal in real estate.

Nobody's mentioned telemarketing yet? I'm shocked!

I worked for DialAmerica Marketing for extended periods a couple of times, and one day for TCIM. ;)

I also spent time on the tech line at DirecTV helping people get back to channel 3, and worked for a while at Thrifty-Rent-A-Car's reservation center.

There is nothing more depressing than working at a call center and having some well meaning person say to you on the phone:

"You have such a nice voice... have you ever considered getting into radio?"

Through my tears, I would say, "yes... and right now at least, nobody wants me!" :'(

I'm better now. :D

I did nights on CHR's all accross the country for abour 12 years, then got my shot at mornings in a top 20 market, stayed there for 8 years(great run). They blew up the station and put me on afternoons on the new station, stayed for 3 years, then they blew that station up and said good-bye to me after 11 years with the company and a wonderful paycheck. Now, after unemployment, a stint at a "broadcasting school"(faking it all the way), and a two week span of delivering phone books...I now drive a big box truck delivering food to nursing homes and factorys...and I went to college for this? And tonight, I audition for a DJ postition at a "gentlemens club"...something I never wanted to do, but the pay is double what driving a truck pays. I have a wife and kids and a mortage...still wanna be in radio recent college grads?

I'm spending my time on the beach so far. I got bounced so high that I can't even afford a QUART of gas, so I'm on mom's couch too! Thank God for the internets, I'm in mind for a handful of AWESOME gigs, the coolest of which are anchor jobs. At the moment I'm pining for the 401(K) check, and THANK GOD for THAT too, otherwise I'd have NO money in the WORLD right now. Is KIRO hiring? They're one of my favorite stations in the country! I LOVE Seattle!

I'm still employed as a trivia/karaoke host, but I'm furloughed from that until they book me some more shows. This IS the Great Depression, Mark II, after all. I've been applying for team management, advertising, promotions, pr, public service, inside sales, inbound calls, etc... especially places that are walking distance right now! I just discovered a dog kennel across the street, maybe they'll let me fulfill my Dog Whisperer dream!

Plant farm huh?

;)

No, not "those" plants ;) . I managed the farm, not handled the plants myself (I'm a BLACK thumb when it comes to flowers.)

Somehow, I've been better at management than anything else....

I was, briefly, an inspector/assistant appraiser for a mortgage company;
a drapery installer's assistant; the lead shipping clerk for a printing plant;
data-storage courier/warehouseman; an auto-parts delivery person;
and a medical courier/secretary...

Rather like the guy who had the job shoveling up the elephant poo at the circus. His friends saw the flies, the smell and the general nastiness of the job and asked why he didn't quit?

"What," he replied, "and give up show business?"

Radio does not prepare you do anything else in the world which is why I advise people who want to be in radio to do only mornings or evenings so you can spend the day doing something that has some chance of carrying you through life.

Either that or marry for money.

Been there after being blown out of mornings at a Gulf Coast CHR. After 4 days as the DJ at a Gulfport, MS, the cops came in one night and raided the place. They lined all the employees up against the wall and started hauling girls to the paddy wagon. The cop reluctantly let me go back to the DJ booth to get my stuff and leave. I still never got my CD out of their machine!

I've done various house DJ gigs at nightclubs and bars, karaoke host, and even been a "Kelly Girl" temp doing typing in offices. Hey, the R&R subscription price to get those (pre-internet) weekly job leads was expensive!

Jeez! How could I forget telemarketing!? I too worked for Dial America, but I quit after a couple of weeks. I was making great commisions, but I hated the work. I spoke with such authority that I basicly talked folks into buying stuff they had absolutely no interest in. I couldnt take very much of that.

Got a real job working for FedEx a company that means it when they say their employee's come first. Straight talk and great pay and benefits. Making more money now than I ever did in the radio biz...

Making more money now than I ever did in the radio biz

That is THE common thread through everyone I've ever talked to who left radio.

EVERYTHING pays more than radio.

If the biz weren't as addictive as crack, would ANY of us stay? :)
