What did you think of Conan's first night?

I thought he did pretty good. I enjoyed it. I was surprised that they kept his old theme music. That was one thing I was very surprised by. Technically someone is screwed though. Audio echos and sync issues where the voice didn't match the video during Network commercials, taped bits and even during Pearl Jam's performance. It lasted the entire show. Someone will be in the Boss's office tomorrow morning.

I notice they have updated Conan's old Late Night theme for the Tonight Show, too. Apparently the Max Weinberg 7 is now call The Tonight Show Band. When the new opening credits ran, I kept expecting to hear Joel's voice again during that familiar theme music. It's an old habit, I guess.

Conan's first Tonight show was great. The only problem I noticed was at the end when Pearl Jam was performing. You could barely hear Eddie Vedder's singing the entire time they were performing. But other than that, it was nice to have Conan back on.

Andy Richter is not a great announcer. Joel was much better.

My first impression was also positive. He's trying to capture the mainstream audience that watched Leno every night without alienating the fans of his best days as host of Late Night. Similar to the style of Letterman's first year or two at CBS. Only time will tell if Jay's fans remain viewers of Tonight, but so far it looks good. It looks like the "late-late-late-late night" rerun that NBC plays is that of Jimmy Fallon instead of old Jay or Conan shows. A gamble? Yes. But they're probably waiting for Conan to have enough episodes of Tonight before re-running them in the early morning hours (or they just don't want to upset the new host of Late Night at this moment).

As for the technical problems, they might have just been the affiliate and not related to the show. I didn't notice any lip sync issues tonight.

Well I get two NBC affiliates. I should have checked the other one. But I don't see any way for it to just be my local affiliate having the problem. It was only during taped segments during Conan and the network spots. The only other exception was during Pearl Jam's performance. But then as soon as Conan started talking things were fine again. I'll have to watch the show online again once NBC uploads it.

I'm curious as to whether or not Conan extended his monologue in the new show. I recall him doing no more than four jokes on his old "Late Night" show.

I thought it was a great first show. Conan looked somewhat nervous, but hey, who can blame him considering the franchise. Richter was eh...kind of a hit-or-miss addition to the show...time will tell if bringing him back was worth it. They did have a couple of funny moments of dialogue there in the opening. The set was cool...kind of a throwback to the Tonight Show appearance of the past, which I liked. I look forward to watching it again tonight.

I have a much different opionion.

I only caught the 2 segments with Will Ferrell and I didn't think Will was all that funny and certainly not as funny as Conan made him out to be. To me, Conan was force-laughing through Ferrell's segments. And, I realize Will Ferrell is supposed to be hot right now and appeals to Conan's demographic audience but, come on, Will Ferrell as your first guest on the new show?? ???

On the bright side, the set looked terrific. ;D

I'll try to watch tonight's show in it's entirety. Maybe I'll have a different opinion.

I liked Ferrell's grand entrance, but not long after that I fell asleep.

Nice set, though.

Well, the thing is.....Will Ferrell isn't funny. Aside from the Cowbell sketch (really made by Christopher Walken), he's just not funny. He tries to be and sometimes almost gets there - but he's not. Even Conan can't violate the laws of physics! :D

Agreed. Ferrell is trying too much to act like the characters he portrays in his movies.

Audio was horrible on KNBC LA, hollow and low. Apparently, Conan did very very good for his first outing ratingwise and Jimmy Fallon benefited greatly from the lead-in. Now, if only Craig Ferguson could get HD cameras for his show. Craig is actually the one to watch out for. He's been nipping at NBC's heels for a while.

I just realized something: Not only was Will Ferrell on the first episode of The Tonight Show with Conan--he was also on the last episode of Late Night with Conan.

The old NBC peacock open sounded underwater, plus you could hear
stray audience sounds. The one other glaring thing I noticed was that
unless the announcer was introing the show or was part of a bit, shut
his mic off! We don't need to hear him laughing, especially at a level
equivalent to Conan's mic.

I think Conan is great but last night's show was certainly missing a lot. There really wasn't a monologue last night so I'll reserve judgment on that one.

I do agree with several posters that the taped sketches were not funny and I forgot just how annoying Andy Richter can be. As much as he and Conan are good friends, I just don't think this was a smart move to bring him back.

Will Ferrell was awful. I'm glad Conan has a real talk show guest tonight -- Tom Hanks. Let's hope the Tuesday show goes much better.

Overall a solid show and a good start for Conan. I don't expect Andy to last - he really doesn't have an announcer's voice. They need to decide whether he's going to be the show's announcer or a sidekick again. I agree with Oldiesfan - we didn't need to hear his laughing or comments.

The Universal Studios tram sketch was vintage Conan - that should play a lot better in the earlier time slot than staring contests with Max would.

I'm no fan of Will Farrell - I don't think he's that funny - but his entrance made me smile. Conan wasn't expecting it either.

On his show, Craig Ferguson also congratulated Conan. Class move. Yeah, I know that's less competition for him, but classy nonetheless.

I used to watch Conan quite a bit when I worked overnight. I missed last night's show, but watched the first ten minutes or so on Hulu today. The opening taped piece was terrific (running through Wrigley Field, stopping at the Victorian Doll museum). Conan has never been a monologue guy, certainly not like Jay Leno, whose roots are standup comedy routines. The set looked fantastic even on Hulu. I'll have to watch in HD at home tonight.

However, I'll be more interested in Leno's new show, because it will directly compete with my newscast (assuming I'm still producing in September) every night.

Lame host. Lame band. Lame technicals. Lame announcer. Lame guests. And what was that draped across the rear of the stage, a shower curtain? ???

Total disaster.

Good luck Conehead. You're going to need it.
