We are always hearing about how AC is a format for women. But a lot of people who post here are male.

These lists include the AC music that I like, and they're not complete.

This first list started as the list of my favorite AC songs and then added oldies, and it later became a dumping ground for songs that didn't fit in another list because the web site where I listed the songs limits characters to 10,000 in a post.

By the way, the three posters with those separate names make fun of each other's musical taste. I can't do that here, but trust me when I say sometimes I'd like a station that plays nothing but the type of music on list number five.

As a 27 year old man who mostly listens to music that is too loud for AC radio, I'm definitely outside of the AC demo.

Adele - Rumor Has It
* Being played on some Hot ACs although the "official" second single for pop stations from her album is "Someone Like You." At AAA radio this song was the follow-up to "Rolling In The Deep." Wouldn't be surprised if it crosses over to AC eventually.

Cee Lo Green - Forget You
* This has peaked at #12 on the Mediabase AC chart and is still hanging around in the mid-reaches of the list.

Nena - 99 Luft Balloons
* Some ACs play it as part of '80s retro features. However it seems most stations play the English version "99 Red Balloons."

Neon Trees - Animal
* Made it onto a handful of ACs in the U.S. and not just the "Fresh" ones.

Len, Robert Miles, and Edward Maya all got Hot AC airplay. I know Edward Maya was played on some mainstream ACs in Canada, and likely Len, being Canadian Content, was also.

Heck I listen to oldies all the time, usually from stations that are at least a blip in the Arbitron ratings. I would venture a guess that those stations have men and women alike listening - while having a good time with football, food and fun...and beer and babes (and a handsome honey).

Well are we discussing oldies or Adult Contemporary? Because today the smart stations are emphasizing the "contemporary" part. CHR's are very adult friendly today. And for AC's to compete, there needs to be "relevant contemporary music" in the mix along with their favorites from the past..generally no further back than the 80s today. It's about ratings to help drive revenue.
 
You can have AC, classic hits or whatever you like; if the ratings don't get there you don't get the advertising.

Funny you should say that. I was just thinking the other day about how 70s music is really starting to drop from AC's, and it makes sense to me. The only AC here in Greenville, SC only plays one every other hour now. Played two an hour until a few months ago. B98.5 has dropped entirely. The era really is starting to sound out of place on AC in 2011, and classic hits really embraces it these days.

I agree. The Classic Hits (or what I like to call them Greatest Hits) is really pushing into the 80s now along with the entire 70s decade. In many instances, the 60s will totally fall away from these stations soon much as the 70s are beginning to at AC.

To me Greatest Hits are stations that evolved from Oldies..CBS-FM, WODE, etc
Classic Hits to me still leans to the "rock side"....in other words no Pop or R&B. Songs that were also Top 40 hits in the 70s and 80s but were also played at what was once AOR.
 
I listen to Classic Hits which has a lot of music which was considered AC back when the songs were hitting the charts (I can listen to that stuff all day ;D ) but I also listen to a lot of AC stations of today too, so.....

And yes, I'm male ;D

I remember when "classic hits" was 70s/80s classic "rock" but lighter. Seems as if most stations that call themselves "classic hits" are stations like WOGL, WODS, WCBS, etc. CBS has used the term "Greatest Hits" some, I believe.

The removal of a lot of 70s music on AC follows Hot AC - those stations have gradually been eliminating 80s music for several years. With Hot AC even de-emphasizing 90s music, I think it's time for AC to start broadening its selections from the 90s. I can name quite a few songs from that era that have been hot AC-only for some reason that I think would fit on the AC format now.
