What Do We Really Know About The D Layer?

Is there really a strong demarcation with the E layer, or is it just an extension of the E layer? The reason I ask is that Daytime skywave seems to be more consistent with a reflecting D layer height, favoring nearby stations from 150-250 miles away, and gradually extending both lower in frequency and longer in distance as sunset approaches. It has been quite extensive this fall, extending from a couple of hours past solar noon.
