What do you call a CHR format?

When someone asks you what kind of music you listen to, what do you say (assuming it's CHR)?

Pop, top 40, hit music, "the stuff z100 plays"

I wish I could just say "I listen to CHR" and non-radio people would understand. Or "listen to that hot new CHR station on 92.3"

I totally understand! I usually end up saying "Pop/Rock/Top 40/Hit Music" just depending on the person. I know some radio people who doesn't even know what CHR is. :D

I usually say "Top 40". Most non-radio people understand that term. There are lots of other radio format names that I have to "translate" to English when speaking with non-radio folks:

Adult Contemporary = "Soft Rock" or "Soft Pop"
Hot AC = "Adult Top 40" or "Pop-Rock Hits"
Rhythmic AC = "Dance"
Rhythmic CHR = "Hip Hop"
Urban = "Hip Hop and R&B"
Urban AC = "R&B"
Active Rock = "Hard Rock"
AAA = "Adult Rock"
Adult Hits = "80's & 90's Oldies"
Classic Hits = "70's & 80's Oldies"
Oldies = "50's thru 70's Oldies"

I suppose radio is no different from other industries this way -- lots of jargon. :)

Heres what I say to a normal NON Radio person that ask my music Preference..... Which leans CHR but more Broad.

Top 40 hits-POP Rock Hip Hop= CHR

Dance= Techno-Hi Nrg Club Music..

Active or Alternative rock= Hard Rock

Rhythmic top 40= Upbeat Rap and Pop hits of today....

CHR = Contemporary Hit Radio.

Therefore, if a station generally plays contemporary hit music, it should be classified as a CHR.
