What do you do at -42 below?

You "read the room" and play music to match the mood, the weather, the season or events happening in the region.

It was 42 below yesterday and there was a cold weather warning from the NWS last night that said there was potential for 60 below windchills. Thankfully, that didn't come to fruition as it "warmed up" to 27 below overnight and there have been no winds.

So what am I doing to lighten/brighten the mood today? Minus the Christmas music I'm sprinkling in, the entire 2 hour morning show is all summer/warm weather themed/titled/mood type songs.

Why? Because I can and I betcha donuts to dollars it'll raise a few eyebrows, smiles and chuckles and get people going with a little extra zip in their step with a little bright light on the radio dial to start their day.

BTW, we're KSKO 89.5 McGrath Alaska serving the west central interior of Alaska with KSKO as the originating station and 7 FM Repeater stations that could but dont originate programming. KSKO is 90 Watts at 60 feet, covering more than enough of the area. Our repeater station signals are in communities even smaller than McGrath (275 people) and some have even less power and height on the tower. We stream online at www.kskopublicradio.com and thats IMediaTouch. No, we haven't moved to the new studio yet, project delays.. but will eventually and will be using Zetta then.

Good work. I agree with your analysis.

I got one text from a listener, "I appreciate your summer themed playlist this morning" and a friend at the clinic i texted because I knew they had trouble getting their vehicles started yesterday said it seemed liek a great idea

I'm going to see what i can do for the afternoon rock show.

How about a surfing theme? Surfin' Bird and a lot of Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, etc.

Some of those are included in the warmer weather/warm weather activities/sunshine/summer theme 12-3 today

The furthest north I ever traveled was to Quebec City in February for their annual ice fest. It may have been 20 below. The locals drink a form of brandy they call caribou. It's supposed to keep you warm. It doesn't. It got so cold, the fluid in my knees froze, making it difficult to walk.

Do you take calls from listeners on air, and ask them things like, '"What's your favorite way to stay warm", offer cold weather tips, see if anyone needs emergency assistance?

You could read them the Southern California weather report in lieu of the real one, for fun.

That's what you get for not doing your annual change of antifreeze.
