What do You Hear?

When you are out and about in the Buffalo area what station do you hear most often in shops, restaurants, doctor's office or the corner tavern?

Well here in Rochester area it always seems to be either something on satellite radio networks like that when I'm stores and such. Actual radio stations I hear often are WRMM or WPXY, sometimes WCMF.

Of course in my car I'm usually listening to either WHAM or WXXI.

I could do a diary for you Mike, because even though I listen to radio like a "civilian" these days, I continue to pay attention to what folks are listening to. At stoplights, if I hear a radio in the next car, I scan through the buttons until the songs match. Yesterday, while waiting for my car to be repaired, the shop had it XM/Sirius on, probably the 80s or AC channel. Went to the barber shop (a manly joint where I may represent the younger customers) last month, they had XM/ Sirius playing the 60s channel and they switched to the AC channel for a bit. Before they bought XM, this place had the radio locked on AM 740, before that Oldies 104. Very upper demo, male of course.

In the last few weeks, Classic Hits has been on in a few banks and stores that weren't tuned to Mix a few months ago. Star is still a comfortable favorite in stores that cater to women (so I'm told by my CEO.) There's a tire store that I've been to three times in the last five months and their radio is welded to 97 Rock. Tire stores are manly. Shredd & Ragan were on for a few days at the Wilson Farms down the street last week, but that store also plays The Lake. Depends on who's behind the counter. The 40+ guy in the morning digs 107.7; the guy in the afternoon is an Edge fan.

Wegman's has a music service that knocks me out on occasion because of the variety of songs from the 70's, 80s, 90s and today. (Maybe it's W-POP... WNY joke.) Went into a parts place on William Street last week and WGR was on. One of the three counter guys was talking back to the radio and he was a hoot. I expect to hear Kiss more often, but since I'm out of the demo and don't frequent stores that cater to the demo, I haven't heard it. Walked by a tanning joint at a mall last week and they were playing WBLK in the afternoon. LOUD! It all depends on who's controling the radio. Last week, visited a financial office and they had an iPod docked for the secretary and support staff. It sounded like American Idol's greatest hits. The last and most notable observation was my dentist, whose secretary was playing Pandora on her computer while doing invoices. Her playlist sounded typically Women 25-44. At the other end of the office suite, the dentist and hygenist were listening to WNED-FM. BTW the jocks, errr, hosts, on 94.5 are pretty uptempo and contemporary. End of diary.

In what distorted Kafkaesque reality will you ever listen to a radio "like a civilian"?

Only between friends who've been in radio, which these days seems to define Kafka-esque, can a person ask another about living in a "Kafka-esque reality."

What, you don't think that Jim is in the midst of a Metamorphosis?

Only a Lit Major, whoever you may be, would mention the The Metamorphosis, one of Kafka's books. I have not been confined to my room and at last check, have not sprouted wings.

See you Tuesday at the Broadcasters' Ball, Al!

In the Northtowns and Niagara county you'd be amazed by the number of Canadian stations that are on in businesses and restaurants. It's more the rule than the exception to hear Virgin 99.9; CFNY, Q-107, HitsFM and CHUM-FM. They offer greater variety without the mind-numbing repetition and a flavor of another country (eh?) Excellent radio stations.

Rochester area workplaces have reached no consensus whatsoever.

Places that cater to a 12-24 clientele seem split between WDKX and WPXY. Adult-oriented places are all over the place. In just the last month I've heard radios in workplace settings tuned to WXXI-AM, WXXI-FM, WCMF, Fox 95.1, Warm 101.3, Legends 102.7, WBEE, and one of the more AC/leaning Sirius/XM channels, with a few sports fans here and there tuned to WROC-AM or WHTK. About the only stations you never seem to hear in a workplace or store in Rochester and environs are WHAM and the religious-oriented stations--I'd assume that's because merchants and professional offices tend to avoid playing stations that are either sectarian or strongly partisan, in order to avoid alienating or offending their customers. Anything else, you'll find playing someplace.

Mom's resturant ,(small resturant) in niagara county - near the factory
outlet - only plays CHFi, 98.1

its nice to have it on . .. .the way there, and continue to
listen on the ride home... adds some thing to the dining experience.

Several data points...

Where I get my hair cut: Gave up satellite radio, now Legends.

A local hobby shop: Fickle or WARM.

A local diner: Fickle (including the American Top 40 replay on Sunday mornings).

Another local hobby shop: WHAM, perhaps the exception to Bob's rule. The proprietor is apparently a Rush Limbaugh fan.

There is unquestionably a large amount of variety whatever service Wegmans uses. I hear songs I own that I've never heard anywhere else, for example, Natalie Imbruglia's "Wrong Impression" (from her second album "White Lilies Island").

There is a fair amount of variety played on whatever the Greater Rochester International Airport uses.

And I also remember the now dear-departed Midtown Plaza playing some interesting songs including "Bridge Over The Stars" by Keiko Matsui.

where i work here in rochester we listen to either the drive for newish adult rock or legends for dome old school neil diamond and john denver. we'd love it if legends mixed in a dash of the grateful dead, but its good stuff anyway

if legends mixed in a dash of the grateful dead

qman...forget the hair place...I can see this, I can hear this!! (snicker, cough)
