What do you think about KPIG in Chico?

Since KZAP 96.7 in Chico has changed formats from annoying hip hop to freeform as KPIG, what do you think about the format so far? This year the market has seen two hip hop stations disappear. The other was Colors 92.7 which had been hip hop, now it's Bob FM, which features an adult hits format & owned by Results Radio, which is locally owned, not like Mapleton is. Also their sister stations in Santa Rosa were sold last year. So is freeform radio coming back to life in Northern California despite the new KPIG format in Chico? Tell us waht you think.

KPIG Radio has everything. It can sound classic, and fresh, all at the same time. Only a handful of stations in this country have the same strength of listener loyalty.

And even though they are part of a corporation (Mapleton), they stay true to the programming philosophies that are the foundation of that station.

Was CLUB 96.7 that bad of a station? Could it have worked there?

If the market once supported 2 Rhythmics... makes sense that one should have done even better all alone.

The HOT AC station seems like a more likely canidate to flip, considering thats a format thats on life-support right now.

Thoughts?

I don't recall Chico ever having 2 Rhythmics. At one time it also had KLRS (colors 92.7) which was a Mainstream CHR.

Rhythmics have just been having a hard time lately, especially in smaller markets. In markets where you depend more on local dollars, you're playing a much harder game called "pleasing local business owners." You have to ride the fine line between being perceived as a "fun station" or "that rap station." One's perception is one's reality.

I don't think the flip was a Club 96.7 "thing" as much as it was Mapleton wanting to spread their KPIG brand while also creating a safer 25-54 radio station.

Speaking of Chico, does anyone remember KFM's AAA leaning era?

It's always sad when the station that just got flipped has a great book... KZAP's last book was awesome!

Wasn't Awesome. But it was Good.

Remember stations go bye bye not because of ratings, but because of billing $$$. Tough sell in chico.

Mapleton will have a much easier time selling the pig even if the ratings are nowhere near Club's. After plunking all their money down and gutting anybody who made money it's all profit to pay for the financing of chico and now also spokane.

KFM and KALF bombed but the point had a little bit of upside for mapleton.

The staff has gone through a lot of turmoil in chico. Give them some time and they'll be strong contenders when they stop worrying if they are next to be fired.

I think its sucks because It not as good as kzap can you guys kewb 94.7 around chico because that a very good one I would listen to that more than the kpig :(

It's a shame such great and legondary calls are buried to a brief station ID once an hour. Mapleton should free up the calls so someone in Sac can move them back. If 96.7 is going to go by KPIG, they should change the calls to something more fitting. Although KKPG, KPPG, or KPGG are not available, how 'bout K-ONK.

KGIP (pig backwards)

I like it. But it looks like it's assigned to the Coast Guard. Doesn't mean that they couldn't petition for the calls and get them. From what I understand, sometimes a ship who's radio is assigned those calls will be decommissioned and the calls are really no longer in use. Don't know the exact rules on it, just what I've heard.
