What do you think you could get if you were...

New one: 101.5 MHz in Ludington, MI (info: WMTE-FM in Manistee is on a low power STA)
Answering my own question:
101.5 in Ludington has been mostly WJNR Iron Mountain. I live in Manistee and WMTE-FM was knocked off completely for twelve hours during a power outage so I got these stations on 101.5:
WIBA Sauk City, WI
WJNR Iron Mountain, MI
WMJZ Gaylord, MI (not 100% sure, but they probably showed up)
WNSN South Bend, IN

Next: 99.9 MHz in Manistee, MI

Here's one, 95.1 directly in the city of Los Angeles. I tried this one a couple weeks ago from the new Global Tuners node down there and was a little surprised at what I got.

The city of Los Angeles is a very big place. If the receiver is in the San Fernando Valley, 95.1 was probably KBBY Ventura; otherwise, KFRG San Bernardino usually dominates. Which one did you hear?

And here's one I'll throw in...92.5 in Crystal Beach, Ontario.

99.9 MHz in Manistee, MI:

Probably alternating WHAK/Rogers City, MI and WHFB/Benton Harbor, MI with weak signals with others such as WSAU and WJVL in strong enough tropo.

92.5 MHz in Crystal Beach, ON:
Probably WBEE mostly and maybe WDJQ and others in tropo

You're forgetting a pretty big one - CKIS in Toronto. But at least at the cottage where I was last week, a couple of blocks north of the lake, Rochester dominated 92.5 (and 95.1, 96.5, 97.9, 98.9 and 100.5 as well). CKIS was the only major Toronto FM that was totally unlistenable there. No sign of WDJQ; the only FMs that made it across the lake usefully were 100.9 and 103.7 from Erie.

I've always wondered what this could result in...
105.7 MHz in Cleveland, OH (if WMJI was off the air)

My guess is that you might hear CJMI/Strathroy, ON (probably most common) then CHRE/St. Catharines, ON. WSRW/Grand Rapids, MI could make occasional appearances too

Pretty much right on, except WZDR slop (and no, they're not 100kW and they don't run I-BLOC) is more common than WJVL. I'm surprised how often WHFB comes in (I get them more than WOOD-FM, which is much closer)

Scott, regarding 95.1, I was expecting a sloppy mess of KFRG and KBBY but when I turned it on, it was almost nothing. I was able to ID a very weak almost inaudible KBBY by matching what I thought I heard on the stream to what I heard. I tried for KGGI as well on 99.1 from that receiver and no luck.

Depending on where in LA the receiver is, that's not much of a surprise. KFRG doesn't make it to the west side of LA or up into the San Fernando Valley most days, and KBBY is the weakest of the Ventura class B signals.

New one: 92.1 MHz in St. James, MI (on Beaver Island)

I'm guessing the most likely candidate here would be WLTU/Manitowoc, WI with the all-water path with others such as WTWS/Houghton Lake, MI, WIDL/Cass City, MI, WQTX/St. Johns, MI and WGHN/Grand Haven, MI making occasional appearances probably mainly with tropo enhancement

That's what I am thinking as well. I think there would be enough room for at least a C2 on 92.1 up there.

Next: 103.5 MHz in Grand Marais, MN

103.5 MHz in Grand Marais, MN:

If the right tropo conditions exist, it may be possible to hear CKED/Thunder Bay, ON (which is a 10 watt repeater to CFQK 104.5) If not them, then 103.5 could be the occasional KUAL/Brainard, MN and/or KRXW/Roseau, MN.

I was thinking those three plus WTCM and KYSM (both of which are 100kW).

New one: 101.5 MHz in New Holstein, WI (this will be different than a year ago and will probably be different within a year)

103.5 in Grand Marais, MN:

Nothing under normal conditions.  The nearest LPFM, WCWL Clearwater Lake, WI, is 142 mi SSE, while the nearest translator, K278BP Cottage Grove, MN, is 237 mi SW.  Tropo would be required to bring either of those in.

I wonder if it's possible to get something 24/7 if you're using a good radio and antenna? (For example, using a Tecsun PL-390 while standing on the roof of a high-rise or at the top of a hill, or a Sony FDR-X1HD connected to an outdoor 32+ element tuned Yagi mounted atop an orange-and-white painted tower with blinking red lights? ;) )

Some full-power stations that tropo may bring in include:
KUAL Brainerd, MN (206mi WSW)
KRXW Roseau, MN (245mi WNW)
KNEI Waukon, IA (312mi S)
WTCM Traverse City, MI (318mi SE)
KZZY Devils Lake, ND (404mi W)
WKSC Chicago, IL (427mi SSE)

Ok, how about; 1490 kHz at the center of the Northlake Festival Shopping Center parking lot in Tucker, GA (before WSB shut off IBOC)?
Or, maybe a 9kHz split: 1071 kHz in the southwest quadrant of Columbia Park in Torrance, CA (before IBOC started being used in southern California)? ;)

Suggestions also welcome for a future similar-condition FM wdytycgiyw entry. A couple ideas include 100.5 at the Soledad Cross in La Jolla, CA, or 90.5 or 90.9 on Mt Wilson.  I don't think 106.3 or 106.7 at Emerald Hills Park in San Diego would work, though, cause KOGO's tower (on which KLNV is mounted) is too high, causing a listener there to not be in the beam's strongest angle, and KLNV is running IBOC. (Maybe a SDR could still dig through it?) Criteria would be a publicly-accessible location within a non-IBOC first-adjacent Class C (or grandfathered super power)'s 148.5 dBu contour.

Or if someone wants to do, at a publicly-accessible spot, a first-adjacent to an AM Class A non-IBOC or its 2nd harmonic (IBOC required if using harmonic) within their 174 dBu contour, that'd be fine too.  :) (Alternately, for the 148.5 (FM) or 174 (AM) dBu contours, substitute whatever signal (for the adjacent pest) would be 0.75dB below what would cause 100 sq mm of skin to warm up by 50C (like going from a ski slope in winter to the Arizona desert in summer) after 90 seconds of exposure over-the-air (without actually physically touching any radiating elements).)
BTW my Tecsuns might struggle some in those situations, but I'd expect a $1k radio like a Perseus would be able to bring in <3 dBu DX, clear enough so that according to DavidEduardo the general public would eagerly listen, just as well as if local nearby-frequency pests were off the air. ;)

IBOC on every AM frequency in Tucker, GA.
Nothing on 1071, since KNX is too strong, in Torrance, CA.

I'd say that if you had a REALLY good radio (with a 20 foot high antenna) - maybe KUAL Brainerd and KRXW. (103.5 in Grand Marais)

Also I'll add
99.9 in Athena, Oregon

-crainbebo

99.9 MHz in Athena, OR - probably depends on precise location in Athena with respect to terrain between you and KWRL and KXLY with either of them possible but probably KWRL more common. Tropo seems less common in mountainous areas

Crain, you may want to keep an ear on your radios as the maps are showing some e-skip activity in the 6m band with paths between Seattle and WY/NE. If the MUF rises later it could get interesting out your way!
