What do you think you could get if you were...

New AM frequency

1460 khz in Malad City, ID.

I have 2 more,
107.7 fm in Grand Portage, MN
1250 am in Francis, WA note the seemingly obvious one is not there. Actually, I'm not sure what would really come in there for sure.

1250 in Francis/Raymond would probably be an EXTREMELY weak KKDZ Seattle in the day, and at night the mix of KKDZ and KWSU (to midnight Pacific time). KWSU signs off, so KKDZ would probably be "solo" on the frequency after 12AM except for some good conditions.

107.7 in Grand Portage, MN - likely KBMX Duluth would be dominant. Also possible: MAYBE WVCY Milwaukee during some EXTREME tropo conditions.

How about 94.5 in Monroeville, IN-

And I hate to backtrack, but I'm curious if our previous poster from last week was able to confirm his country station on 102.1 in Indianola, IA? I still think it could have been KEEY from Saint Paul, MN.

107.7 in Grand Portage, MN - A mix of KBMX and WMQT, with the occasional WVCY appearance
94.5 in Monroeville, IN - Likely WXKR, with WTNR, WLQT, and WCEN making rare appearances

Hmm. I need a better DX radio, I don't think I was able to get 1250 down there. As for 107.7, isn't Duluth to Grand Portage quite a ways? Does this mean that 104.5 in Vancouver WA would be KMCQ mixing with the Way FM translator down there?

My personal experience with 94.5 in Monroeville, IN a weak mix of WXKR Port Clinton, OH and WTNR in Holland, MI. I also had a fade-up from WMXL in Lexington, KY.

I haven't heard the country station on 102.1 pop back up out here in Indianola since the other day. I think there was aircraft scatter involved since it was very brief when it did show up but I'm guessing it was KEEY. This morning that frequency is absolutely dead. Can't even get a trace of KCKC. Also KWQW 98.3 appears to be off the air. There's another weak station in its place advertising a concert called "country on the river"

In North Platte, NE and tuned to 1060 kHz? (day and night)

Thought we could try this game where people can post what they would guess would come in on a certain frequency at a certain location. Of course if anyone has actually DXed from the location, then post what you could get there. Then every couple of days or so, someone can post a new frequency and location for others to guess what would come in there.

How about this..

You are on a cruise ship roughly 1000 miles off the California coast and it's midday.

I'm thinking with a good receiver you may get...

560 KSFO

600 KOGO (possibly, but I'm not sure what their exact pattern is)

610 KEAR

640 KFI

680 KNBR

710 KSPN

830 KLAA

The signals would probably be very weak but still audible enough to get IDs.

I didn't include any higher frequencies like KNX because, as we know, the higher frequencies don't have the same strength for a surface path.

Possibles....

570: KLAC
580: KMJ
870: KRLA

Would KBRT's new site have a chance?

I think your country 98.3 is KQYB Spring Grove, MN. That's the closest 98.3 to Prairie Du Chien, WI, the home of the Country on the River music festival.

My prediction: NOTHING AT ALL. AMs would probably fade 300 miles out. The only way to get any radio would probably be Shortwave.

As reference points, below per the appropriate FCC chart are the distances to the daytime groundwave fields from a 540 kHz, 50 kW omnidirectional station using a 1/2-wave monopole located at the ocean shoreline.

Input Data:
Frequency = 540 kHz
Tx Power = 50 kW
H-plane IDF at 1 mile = 1675.8 mV/m
Earth Conductivity = 5000.0 mS/m

Results:
Field Intensity Distance
0.150 mV/m 681.7 miles
0.100 mV/m 748.5 miles
0.050 mV/m 848.6 miles
0.010 mV/m 999.9 miles

AM and FM:
570 KHz in Manistee, MI
94.9 MHz in West Olive, MI (between Grand Haven and Holland)
To answer my own question:
570 KHz in Manistee, MI is WMAM Marinette, WI most of the time. WNAX Yankton, SD makes an appearance prior to Yankton sunset.
94.9 MHz in West Olive, MI is a weak W235BU Grand Rapids (250W!). I thought it would be a mix of that station, WSJM-FM St. Joseph, and WKZC Scottville, with WOLX Baraboo, WI possibly getting involved right on Lake Michigan.

300 miles? You kidding?

The New York stations can be heard midday in Bermuda @ 770 miles, along with other stations from the US.

http://radiodiscussions.com/smf/index.php?topic=214194.0

KTRH from Houston @ 775 miles midday in summer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WcH0JN1irg

WSHO New Orleans (only 1kw) @ 465 miles midday in summer.

And speaking of 300 miles and California stations, KFI still has a listenable signal @ 300 miles and that's completely over land except for the 20 miles of Monterey Bay.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNzZw2aS_34

Well 300 miles with a not so good radio. Probably close to 6-700 with a good radio. But a listenable signal probably will fade away around 300-400 miles out. By the time you reach 700+, it's silent on the radio except for SW.

So then how do you explain cd getting the New York stations @ 720 miles out with a listenable signal?

I've heard the audio recordings too and they are easily listenable.

Others have reported the same thing from Bermuda.

And I got KTRH at 775 miles.

The outer banks of North Carolina are more than 300 miles from New York City and some here have reported hearing the big NYC stations midday with nearly local quality on a good radio which means they would still be listenable at least on a not so good radio.

WWL from New Orleans sounds nearly local on the Gulf beaches of central Florida @ around 465 miles on most radios and would sound better if it weren't for the splatter of the local 860 WGUL.
