What do you value more?

Lets say your a decent broadcaster and you have two job offers:
1.a top 20 market making a average salary doing lets say drive time or mornings!
2.a top 200 market... alot smaller maybe 250,000 ppl but making more money
what would you choose?? and why?

2. No question. Good money? Less Crime? Less Traffic? Less Hassle? Plus after a while you achieve Local Gawd status? Believe me. I've worked both, and I'll take choice #2 anytime. I did mornings in Grand Rapids, MI. We had lousy numbers but a huge loyal audience base. How do I know? We would have standing room only at our remotes and concerts. We were megastars to those folks. Why? Because what else do they have as local celebrities? The single A Baseball or Hockey teams? (Of course they were all megastars too). The folks were really nice too, and I made decent money. I could've worked there for the rest of my life, I just hated the cold weather and you simply just can't find good mexican food North of Conroe. So I left. Hope this helps. Just my opinion. Why, do you have that choice to make?

This scenario doesn't make much sense to me. How would someone make more in a 200+ market vs. drive time in a top 20 market?

G

ok let's say the money is almost the same but ofcourse life in general is cheaper in the smaller market.. I guess the question in general is what's a better choice personal success in a bigger market or better living...the station in the top 200 market is owned by a owner with a lot of money but not so much knowledge of what dj normaly make so really he over pays!

I agree with the Colonel. There's something about being the big fish in the small pond.

"How would someone make more in a 200+ market vs. drive time in a top 20 market?" - great point.

I agree with Kevin and CstJ. Give me Timbucktoo w/ great pay over Houston w/ good pay.

Got to agree with the Colonel. My days at KLYX in Clear Lake City were the best of my limited (seven-year) full-time career. The people knew us and we knew them, our audience was solid, and despite the drive from near Spring, I never had more fun. In my Houston days I was just another three-four hour shift jock. I showed up and I went home. No fun at all.

im just thinking if the person chose the money over the bigger market he might regret latter not having had played with the big boys to see how far up he could have gotten!

I would do both....

Climb the ladder as high as I could by 45 and hone my skills to a sharp edge. Learn to play the game with sales so that we both make money. Then, cash in the name recognition and new skills for a big job in a secondary market with terrific weather, make a ton of money in endorsements, securing my future at the station as long as I want to work.

Why kill yourself for a manager that doesn't care? That white guy has a shorter career than I would.

I'll chime in with being the big fish in the small pond. At WVCH, I'm the only one on the staff who knows computers to some deatail. Also do some of the engineering work. Management trusts my observations on what needs to be improved/upgraded, and have taken some of my suggestions. What I do there is valued and appreciated, and that means a lot to me.
