What do your locals run for E/I programing?

I'm always interested in hearing about what local stations decide to air as E/I programing (because someitmes it's really obscure or oddball stuff) so please share if you don't mind. :)

Our loal Christian station (WVCY) airs Davey And Goliath, Sunshine Factory, Becky's Barn, and The Secret Place. They're all low-budget Christian (of course) themed shows that are entertaining based mostly on how much they come across as low budget Sesame Street ripoffs.

WCGV (UPN 24) airs The Smurfs (!). I have no idea how that's educational... Theu used to air Dennis The Menace (the 1980's DIC cartoon) which was awesome. They also air Garfield And Friends which is a personal favorite of mine. :) <P ID="signature">______________

Well, here's what the station reported to the FCC regarding the educational content of the program...

The series uses the narrative/educational device of a wise and patient elder who guides younger generations as they learn to deal with the complexities of interpersonal relations and their own, sometimes quite confusing feelings. As the Smurfs confront the day-to-day events of Smurf community life, they encounter unexpected obstacles, unexpected issues, and unexpected feelings that threaten their plans, their community, or their own self-image. Papa Smurf helps the younger Smurfs figure out who they are and how they should behave, and strives to teach them the power of love and caring. Various individual episodes explore such issues as kindness, greed and sharing, fighting, perseverance, responsibility, humility, teasing, carelessness, expressing feelings, self-confidence, fears, and others viewpoints.

Replace "Smurfs" with any title of any animated or live-action series and, voila... instant E/I.

With wording like that, I'm surprised no one tried to sneak "The Simpsons", "That 70s Show" or even "Married With Children" as E/I.

Neither do we -- apparently, DIC (in association with Tribune, on behalf of Warners) is pushing "The Smurfs" as an E/I program.

I have a feeling that DIC thought that their actual E/I-worthy shows, like "Get Along Gang" and "The Littles", put viewers to sleep, so they offered The Smurfs as more exciting E/I fare.

"Ron Popeil Infomercial" E/I Report:

WSAH Bridgeport/Seymour, Connecticut (The COL is Bridgeport, but the "studios/tower" is in Seymour) the Scrips owned Shop@Home Affiliate runs a crappy kids show from 7AM-8AM on Wednesdays from the Akron Ohio Public Schools called "Ask Gilby" Then from 8AM-10AM are for episodes of the "New Zoo Revue" from the 1970s. Sister Station WMFP in Boston, MA runs them too.<P ID="signature">______________

Having not seen it I wonder what makes it so bad. Even so, props to the station for the courage to program something local. Every station should be doing something local for at least one half-hour of core time per week.

Not counting the Big 3 affiliates and PAX (which are obvious):

WABM-68 (UPN) shows The Smurfs M-W at 7am, and other DIC shows "Go For It" and "Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century". (Note related to some of the things further down the thread: They actually were airing The Littles at that point.

WTTO-21/WDBB-17 (WB) shows the PBS show "Liberty's Kids" early weekday mornings and is trying to palm "Sabrina: The Animated Series" off with an E/I tag.

WJXS-CA-24 (FamNet) shows a bunch of Christian-themed shows, the most notable being "Mary Lou's Flip-Flop Shop" starring former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton.

WTJP-60 (TBN) carries more Christian E/I stuff than any other 2 networks put together. Imagine that, one FCC rule they actually follow. . . :)

The only trouble, though, it was produced in Akron, Ohio, and WSAH is in Bridgeport, CT.

Which means that "Ask Gilby" isn't exactly local.

OK, so I misunderstood. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Still, every station should have the courage to do something on the local level to meet the E/I quota. Too bad they don't.

I liked both of them. I remember watching both shows when I was like 5. Puts all the "E/I" nonsense they have today to shame.

Heck, if they still had those two shows, I'd still watch them TODAY.

TV networks today are too focused on doing the bare minimum instead of trying to put together something that meets the law and will generate viewers at the same time. A good E/I show will not only be educational, but be entertaining enough to keep viewers at the same time. If it's entertaining enough, it'll even keep some older viewers.

Yah, I remember it from the standpoint that it was co-produced by Belo and Columbia Pictures Television's attempt at a kids science program which started on TLC but within a year moved on to syndication and later on CBS. In 1993 Disney came out with the more popular Bill Nye the Science Guy (originally syndicated and later on PBS).<P ID="signature">______________

Apparently, even reruns of shows like Beekman and Bill Nye (maybe even the animated "Back To The Future", which included a science experiment with Christopher Lloyd and Bill Nye) aren't in demand, as they rather get cheap stuff for cheap money (like old New Zoo Revues).
