What does K-Rock need to sound like to survive

Play newer rock and alternative, stop giving the classics so many spins. The argument of "there isn't any good new music" is just as old and worn out as K-Rock's play list.

classics are good, but not if their 7 out of 10 songs (wzzo...CC of course, they suck)

a god example of a great station is 107.1 The Bone out of the Lehigh Valley (alot like YSP and MMR out of Philly and 95.9 The Rat, which are great stations) in fact the bone may even be harder than those three.

107thebone.fm

mostly modern and 90's rock, wit a fair amount of classics in the mix, but its not the same 20 songs over and over again, and the classics are not just sweet home alabama and money. not to mention the 3 hour commercial free rock blpce from 9 to noon.

its boring when a station (like zzo) playes the same 3 boring currents (without the soad, disturbed ratm, korn, etc) with the same 10 classic rock tracks played in a different order 24/7... and for the love of god, get rid of the nickleback, except for maybe side of a bullet and animals.

as for K-Rock, i dont personally think they sound to bad. i just thing zzo and y102 are horrible (if you ever heaard these two, you'd think the same thing. but i think K-Rock is decent (just my opinion)

WZZO: Horrible. Generic, token CC rock station.

WRAT/WDHA/WMMR: Same owners, same generic sound. While they play more currents than ZZO, it's really just a handful more - about 15 or so tops. They all shy away from the heavier stuff, seldom ever play even Tool (other than "The Pot" maybe), and have a lot of questionable material they choose to spin. WRAT plays too much Nickelback and 3 Doors Down, too much of hair metal junk like Guns N' Roses, and a lot of songs that have NO PLACE on a rock station (i.e. Buckcherry's "Sorry", Santana/Chad Kroeger's "Into The Night"), and played a lame version of Five Finger Death Punch's "The Bleeding" that replaced the screaming with weak singing.

WXRK: They sound the worst of all. Honestly, I'm surprised they even get the ratings they currently do - they are THAT bad. A small amount of currents, way too much Linkin Park/Red Hot Chili Peppers/Foo Fighters, and all of this old geezer rock that you can hear a million other places.

I think they need to go for either an Alternative or Active sound, rather than the Heritage mess that they are now. Either an Indie or FNX sound with plenty of NYC based acts like Strokes, The Bravery and Interpol in the mix, or an aggressive rock sound like 93.5 The Beach (WZBH) in the Delmarva area. They have yet to attempt either, and both would be a tremendous improvement over what they are doing now. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone at CBS has the stones to give something like this a try, and the station will just end up going Country or CHR.

Agree on almost all counts. I think the best plan would be for K-Rock to go straight up Active, leaning towards the heavier bands but continuing to play the 90's stuff that people STILL (for some odd reason) want to hear. Of course, they could vary up by not playing the same 4 Foo Fighters songs as well.

RXP should go Indie/FNX-style Alternative. There are so many shows around the city that they could get involved with. Dump the classic rock because, chances are, someone who enjoys Cold War Kids and Vampire Weekend does not want to hear Aerosmith in between. Also, I've said this so many times, we ALREADY HAVE A CLASSIC ROCK STATION so can we PLEASE reserve the airspace we have on our "rock" stations for new material?

Simple, Either Octane on Sirius or like the old 96 Rock in delmarva WOSC 95.9 Bethany Beach. That station was kick ass, They had local acts every 8 minutes all day long and some old and new metal. I never got tired of listening to them when i was down in the area. I even made some MP3's of them and still to this day don't get tired of hearing them. Now they are another run-of -the muck CC rock station, better than K-Rock though. If K-rock took this direction and threw in artists like Anthrax, slipknot, and Corrosion of Conformity, they will get listeners cause NO ONE else is playing those types of artist. I know i would tune in again. Just my thoughts.

well, a lot of people like to hear classic and new on the same station, which is what active rock is, as long as it aint the same 10 overplayed classics. like i said, give this station a listen if your ever in the lehigh valley area... www.107thebone.fm too bad their signal sucks.

ps: i dont mind A Punk from vampire weekend, but it doesnt belong on active rock radio, thats more like RXP material.

 ( I don't even have to put my reaction to your post in words! I think that expression says it all!!! ;D).

Great suggestions, but how likely will CBS Radio implement any of these or will they switch formats after the PPMs roll out and show no big increase in ratings?

I think a AAA format that appeals to the "intelligent rock" genre. Zevon, Talking Heads, Steely Dan, Vampire Weekend, Feist. New York has such a rich history of QUALITY rock radio. The old WPLJ and WNEW used to have DJ's that played good music and were also teachers....we need to get back to that.

You mean programming with heart? Well...good luck with that...

(BTW...by "programming with heart," I don't mean playing "Barracuda/Crazy On You" 6 x a day)

They need to play:
Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, Paramore,The Academy Is,Cute Is What We Aim For, Daughtry, etc. Basically any band/artist signed by Fueled By Ramen Records. They have some pretty sick bands.

RXP is fine by me and good to listen to at work.
XRK needs to to straight up Modern Rock- Active Rock will not work at this time. Modern Rock allows for more flexibility to play a bigger variety of artists:

Beastie Boys
Finger 11
Staind
Thoery of a Dead Man

No Classic Rock which is available on Q104.3. Why would you listen to 92 for Classic Rock anyway? It just makes your younger demos plug in a CD or ipod.

Classic Rock could be played on a lunch time request show. It would concentrate the demo into the one or one and a half hour slot - bringing additional TSL and advertisers.

They need to sound like WHTG at the shore...NY needs a real alternative station.
I live in central Jersey and I'm dying with the bad choices....

Get HD. The new WNEW-HD is REALLY good.

Ugh, I'm sorry but you guys have some terrible ideas.

The solution is not "Play more bands that I like. I'll listen!"

The problem is that they have reverted back to a formula that FAILED more than two years ago ("Great Rock. Period" anyone?) Quick, name 10 currents the station currently plays!

.....

Yup, couldn't do it could you. No one tunes in because there is NOTHING exciting worth listening for. If you want to hear the same stale classic rock songs and 90's alternative/grunge songs, 92.3 is for you. I like my alternative/active stations to play at least 20-25 currents a week. But, for some reason, New York radio just can't figure that out.

K-Rock, do us all a favor and just go active. We know that's what your target demo wants. Sure, you'll never get GREAT ratings, but could you happy with a 2.5 or something?

RXP, do us a favor and just go alternative. NOBODY who likes Spoon and Modest Mouse wants to hear some terrible Aerosmith song in between the two (and they certainly don't want to hear Lite Favorites such as Lifehouse and Nickelback mixed in either).

For one, my original suggestion with 99.9 KISW The Rock of Seattle and Funky Monkey 104.9 would work well with K-Rock since both put together is active/alternative/rhythmic rock all in one. There are alot of fans who like RXP being AAA..if that's what you want to call it. NYC will have it covered if it can put those two stations into one. It is possible folks.
