What does QMF need to do to be more competitive?

Run a playlist more like 107.3 the Point? Or drop the 90s and sound more like 1077? I personally like their playlist much more then 1077, but the ratings seem to indicate that people disagree with me. I say drop Bob and Tom and go local in the morning, then expand the playlist throughout the day. Maybe more classic rock orientated during the work day, then harder edge rock for evening and overnight. I would love to read a discussion on this.

I dont know if it means anything to 95.7 or not but i have noticed there sister station 93.1 has added some classic rock to there playlist which as of a few months ago the fox wasnt playing any.

I like QMF too. Could they be more local? Yes. Could their music be too hard and unfamiliar? Maybe. SFR burns through the same 3 or 4 hundred "SAFE" songs everyday and out performs QMF in the ratings. I like it for my personal taste but safe and local seems to win. I don't think running sweepers that mention towns in the area is being local. I don't think doing water cooler/pop culture raps is being local. I think understanding and relating to your target is essential but nothing beats boots on the ground. The WHAS Crusade for Children is the best example of "LOCAL RADIO" in this market and among the best in the Nation. Terry Meiners is a great example of a local personality. He does some National water cooler/pop culture stuff. But mostly he takes on local topics in a humorous way. He gets trashed on this board some times, but if you have ever tried to put a show together even on a music intensive Radio Station you know how hard it is to do day in and day out. Terry has been getting that done for years. And I also know that every Radio Company has their own way of doing things and some don't give personalities much of a chance to say anything. Your thoughts? L

It strikes me that all Gold-based stations have a huge challenge trying to sound fresh and relevant when the music they play is 35 years old. My hat is off to anyone who can make it work, but it's ultimately a demographic time bomb.

107.7 does it somehow though. They don't really sound fresh, but they get good ratings.

Have they hired a new morning show yet?

Maybe a new program director... Oh I'm showing my age.. A new brand manager. Charlie has been at the station to long. He has never worked a market other than Louisville. NEW BLOOD would help.

IMO replacing Charlie as PD would only hurt QMF more. There aren't too many people who work harder than he does at what he does. He knows what he's doing and has a very good head on his shoulders. When 1077 was still SFR, they did a great job of making it uncool to listen to QMF because of all that talk. I think, to a degree, that thought is still in the back of peoples heads. I think they need to figure out a way to change people's listening habits. Also, I don't know how much control there is over the music at the local level. Premium Choice, you know...

I agree with a lot of what Craven just said. SFR did a great job of re imaging themselves from "Superstar 1077" to being the #1 classic rock station. QMF became known as a talk station. That's why I say drop the two clowns in the morning and go local. I feel like QMF's music selection, imaging and local jocks are much better then they've been in a log time. They just need to get the word out better.

I remember when charlie was doing weekends at djx i believe chris shebel was pd at the time and one of the songs that was a hit was jill sobule kissed a girl. Quite a bit different then hearing stairway to heaven or freebird on his present home. But i give props to charlie i called him when the fox dropped loveline and asked him why and he answered all my questions.

On a sidenote loveline has not been good since mr corolla left!!!

"The read deal Charlie Steele" I remember that as well.

Why did the Fox drop Loveline anyway?

What are you up to these days, Craven?
