About the same. Might be a little better in the summer because I'm at the local beach. I just bought a smaller radio (Tecsun) that will be easier to take into the field. My Eton Grundig Edition is nice, but it can be bulky.

WMID AM 1230 and 1340 (with a new FM as well) Atlantic City, NJ.

WILD 1090 has been off lately. WBAL coming in especially late afternoon (here in Beverly MA)

Not picking up the revived WMEX 1510 Quincy that is now back on? (by day)

It was in a long-forgotten 1947 book called 'The Dodgers and Me' when I caught the expression I now cadge to describe the AM dial fare here in my NE Pennsylvania home.

The book was a (largely) ghost-written book about Leo Durocher's career as manager of the baseball Dodgers.

The BROOKLYN Dodgers. 1939 to 1947. The co-author was Ed Linn. It is a terrific read, sort of like those spinning newsreel front=page highlights you'd see on a movie screen. In the book, a sportswriter for a Brooklyn paper name of Tom Meany described the first experiment at having a home-plate umpire, batter and catcher wired for sound so the crowd could enjoy any such conversations over the Ebbet's Field speakers.
Meany described the first few attempts at this experiment as 'A thousand eggs, frying simultaneously' *.

That apt description certainly fits the daytime AM dial's sound here in NE PA. And I have a few good AM DX radios, too .... a Grundig SR 270 portable, two GE Superadio 2's, and some minor foot-warmer called a Hammarlund HQ-180. Two loops and a 70' longwire.

A thousand eggs frying. It's been this way for at least 5 years, in two different dwellings. Both my houses here in Frackville have been doubles/attached's. Everywhere here is a noisy hell.

So on a good day, off wall-current, I can get
WHP 580 Harrisburg
610 WIP Philly
WAEB 790 Allentown
WEEU 830 Reading
Local and semi-locals WPPA 1360 Pottsville and Oldies WLSH 1410 Lansford....
You get the idea, I guess.
In the car, away from the wall-current and other house racket, I can hear more. But unlike a lot of people, I don't enjoy freezing in the car for hours DXing in February.

* Writer Tom Meany's account of that day also stated that, by maybe halfway through the game (just as the ump and the batter were cursing out each other) that the sound system began working loud and clear! Some 20,000 people at Ebbet's Field plus a few hundred folks from nearby apartments began blushing upon hearing many 4-letter words .... all the old favourites plus some new hyphenated expressions, etc.

** 'Nice Guys Finish Last' by Durocher (his later book, from the early 70's) is an inferior read.

You don't receive KYW? Here, WABC's signal is horrible even though I'm practically on the water.

I wonder if that Hammarlund is the same model I saw in an antique shop a few weeks ago..

I had the HQ-170, which was a very good performer on the amateur bands. It covered 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10 and 6 meters. The 180 was a general coverage receiver (medium wave up to 30 mc., as the frequencies were expressed in then) with an identical look and, I assume, performance. It was more for shortwave broadcast enthusiasts. Never used the 170 as a foot warmer, but it did work on frosty fingers on nippy nights, and the aroma it generated is one I'd instantly recognize today if I were to come across another. I got the 170 in 1971 before getting my novice ticket, but sold it at consignment in the '80s when I moved up to solid state for my SWLing, which became my main interest after choosing not to go any further as a ham.

Good topic. Here where I am northwest of Chicago, the dial is pretty full. And we also cover this in full detail with our ongoing frequency of the week series. But, I also think having this in another format where we can have an at a glance version is a good idea that can be useful, so I'll offer a condensed version for my location....Freq. Calls, Signal strength

I will try to do a daytime bandscan here in Laramie, WY... i have 2 local aMs and thats it.. every other AM is 40, 80, 120, 150 miles away.

I've never done a bandscan at say, straight up 12noon.

650 - KPRP Honolulu - Barely audible mid day but often weak and listenable well into the morning

670 - KPUA Hilo - Fair to strong but still not local strength which surprises me because it's only 12 miles away and 10,000 Watts non directional

690 - KHNR Honolulu - Barely audible mid day but often weak and listenable well into the morning

760 - KGU Honolulu - Barely audible mid day but often weak and listenable well into the morning

830 - KHVH Honolulu - Barely audible mid day but often weak and listenable well into the morning

850 - KHLO Hilo - Weak which surprises me being it's just 12 miles away and 5,000 Watts non directional

1060 - KIPA Hilo - Fair but still not local sounding which, again, is surprising at 12 miles away and 5,000 Watts non directional

What a difference a mountain makes! During my two days on the windward side of the mountain (near Captain Cook) as a teenager during the Christmas Holiday break 1964, ALL of the Honolulu AMs boomed in via saltwater path. Including KIKI, which was on 830 at the time with 250 watts. Further up the dial KPOI (5kw on 1380) sounded like a local on 1380 24/7 albeit with some minor convergence fading at night. Meanwhile not even a whiff from any of the Hilo AMs.

Knoxville TN Part 2:

700--extremely weak WLW
710--WEKC, Williamsburg KY
720--WGCR Pigeon Forest, NC
